2013... This is the year of Yes!

"This is the year of yes, to look in the mirror and say, “Yes, He made you this way and it is very good! Yes, you can try! Yes, be creative! Yes, laugh and yes, give it a whirl, and yes, it’s really okay, don’t be afraid!”
This is the year of yes, to kneel down and peer into eager faces and say, “Yes, you can, yes, that’s an ingenious idea, yes, make that, yes, yes, yes!”

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck
(written after she found out she had cancer).

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle..

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later... Now go get washed up for dinner.' There would have been more 'I love you's, more 'I'm sorry's.'

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute; look at it and really see it; live it and never give it back. I'D STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!

------
My personal addition to Erma's list is this: Since being diagnosed with cancer, it's been sinking in that I am not to linger in the "Coulda, woulda, shouldas" but rather recognize the big and little changes in my life/growth that I'd like to make, stop putting off things I want to do, then proactively and purposefully make these things happen.

My girls had asked for years to see snow (we live in FL). What fun we had together finally making their dream come true with an adventure in beautiful New Hampshire this past winter! Highlights were being nestled in a charming cabin in the woods cooking dinner over a woodstove with friends, learning to ski upright without breaking my neck (funny how quickly kids get the hang of it unlike me: what a thrill when it "clicked" and I did it!)), making snow men, women, and angels, snow ball fights, the construction of an igloo fort, sledding, and playing in the stuff. I grew up in CT so had seen plenty of snow but it was something my daughters longed for, for years but we didn't take the time to do it. Boy, that was fun to finally make that trip happen! The guys held down the fort at home (they don't care about snow) and us girls sure did make some happy memories together. Same thing on camping: cancer woke me up to delay no longer and it was a blast. I like that "Just do it" Nike quote.

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

"We all have messes in our lives. Financial messes. Relationship
messes. Health messes. Home messes. Business messes.

Sometimes messes are small and just feel like a slight annoyance.
Other times, they’re so huge they strip the hope right out of our
lives. But here’s a thought to ponder right in the midst of your mess…

Am I letting this mess define me or refine me?
The answer to this question is crucial.

If I am letting a mess define me, I will feel hopeless.
If I am letting a mess refine me, I will be hopeful."

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

These have been so uplifting, comforting, challenging.
They also take on new meaning when a diagnosis progresses to metastatic.

One of my favorites:
"When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught how to fly." (Barbara J. Winter)

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

A right time to cry and another to laugh,
A right time to lament and another to cheer,

ECCLESIASTES 3:4 (THE MESSAGE)

"...And in their book, Dear God, It’s Cancer, authors William Fintel, M.D. and Gerald McDermott, Ph.D. emphasize that …

“… both tears and laughter are gifts of God –
and you need them both
to make it through the trials of cancer.”

So no matter how many tears we shed – no matter how deep and dark the pit we found ourselves in – we have discovered on our own journey that there is always a time to laugh and it sure makes the journey easier to endure. As the comedian Bob Hope - who had the gift to make others laugh - said …

“I have seen what a laugh can do.
It can transform almost unbearable tears
into something bearable –
even hopeful."

“Laughter is like changing a baby’s diaper – it doesn’t permanently solve any problems but it makes things more acceptable for a while.”

Love that last one about changing the baby's diaper! We always need to find something else to laugh about just as that diaper will surely need changing again soon.

Denise had some threads with humor. She knew the power of laughter!

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

I like that quote, BrendaB. Thanks for sharing.
I'm so sorry about the progression to metastisis. How are you feeling? I hope things go real for you!

Here's a blurb below from the archives of my blog from two years ago. It's part of my personal cancer battle plan to picture those Her2 cells being rendered powerless.

1/28/12
This morning I am putting on my classy, bright pink boxing gloves by getting my port hooked up to my every 21 day dose of intravenous Vit H. Herceptin is mercilessly knocking the daylights out of cancer for me. Thank You God, for the gift of Herceptin on my side of the boxing ring! Go get ‘em Herceptin! Knock ‘em dead Herceptin, so that I can live! Thank You Lord, that no matter the physical outcome of this match that I am fighting so hard in and rooting so much for, I am a winner BECAUSE OF YOU! Thank You for the assurance of the final outcome.

Re: Collection of Quotes that Relate to the Cancer Journey

I'm taking it one day at a time, which I learned last year. Guess we all learn that one sooner or later when dealing with cancer. My sense of humor is still trying to bounce back. I told the doctor that cancer couldn't take my peace or my joy. I forgot to claim my sense of humor too.
Getting Kadcyla every 3 weeks, had 2 doses already, so far so good.
