Released from my Onc. today.
Hello all......
Just wanted to share my day with you all here. You would understand "my" world and all that goes with that.
I had my 6 month follow up (what I've been doing since I was at 2 years from dx) today and after discussing everything, me and my onc. decided to cut me loose! I reached my 5 year cancerversary this summer. I have a good primary doctor in the city I live in and he is a very thorough doctor who takes my concerns seriously and always follows through with any concerns I have. So, it was decided that I would quit going to see my onc. and see my primary doctor annually, as I do now, for cholesterol, etc.
When he was doing my exam today he asked me if I had any concerns since my last visit. I mentioned to him that I had recurring pain (more like an ache/burning) on my upper right side...some digestion problems and although I felt it was not liver related, felt I would be smart in mentioning it. He agreed and examined the area. He said my liver was not enlarged and told me he felt it sounded more gall bladder related. However, he ordered an ultra-sound that I had this afternoon. THANKFULLY, when the test was over they told me to go back to the clinic to see my onc. (I thought I'd have to wait for results over the weekend - UGH - we all know how awful that is) I thought...uh oh.....could it be.....my liver???? It was NOT!! I have gall stones and he referred me to a surgeon who specializes in laporoscopy removal of the gallbladder. I will speak with him next week.
Imagine, my final exam, and then I have to have a test to see if I have cancer again! Seemed a fitting ending....to a journey that has seemed long and yet in some ways it seems like this all happened to another person, and not me.
Anyway, long story short.....I am well......I no longer have to see an onc. and tonight I sit here with a heart that is thankful for my God helping me through ALL I've been through and for all that I've learned through this journey. Truly, it's been amazing and the blessings far outweigh the negatives.
You all are many of those blessings I received. I thank you for your love and support. My prayers for all of you always.

Congrats! Enjoy the benefits of the big C wake-up call  And good luck with the surgery. I keep seeing how they are able to do cholycystectomy in ever less invasive ways. I hope if I ever need one they will have advanced it to the point that it's a high tech nose blow. |

I want to be you when I grow up!! We all want to be in your wonderful position! You earned it fair and square.
I had the GB surgery a few years ago. After cancer, it will seem like cake for you.

Congratulations! Mary Jo! After all you've been through, the removal of gallbladder is going to be a 'piece of cake'. However, a surgery is a surgery is a surgery. Please keep us posted.

Yes, fitting that you uncovered an additional problem that is NOT cancer related on your *last* onc appointment. Those odd aches and pains can lead to things like that.
Now you will have it done and over so one less "could it be???" pain to worry about.

MY STORY SO FAR ~~~~
Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Congrats on the good news MaryJo, I was five years out this summer but my onc said to to make another appt (I just see her once a year in Dec). I think if she cut me loose I'd have similar feelings to how I did when herceptin finished, for a while at least
I do recall when I was first diagnosed being told I'd attend the onc until I was five years out, it seemed at the time I'd never get here, so I'm sure I can expect the same news as you when I see her next.
I also had gall stones but they were very inflammed by the time I had my gall bladder removed, my advice is to get this sorted asap as the pain gets a lot worse with most people.

It's wonderful that you don't have to see your onc any more, and that you feel your primary care GP is able to handle any concerns you might have in the future. Now that's a really good place to be.
I'm glad your concerns about pain turned out to be your gall bladder. That's a relief.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Results to FISH was unsuccessful--this happens less then 2% of the time.

Dec 09 - Mastectomy LB, 2.4 cm, 1/27 nodes, Stage IIB
Jan 10 - Taxotere/Carboplatin/Herceptin (TCH) for 18 weeks (1X every 3 weeks); Herceptin every week for 18 weeks then every 3 weeks 'til week 51
Apr 10 - Blood transfusion to increase red blood cells
Apr 10 - Change regimen to Taxotere/Cisplatin/Herceptin
May 10 - Chemo done!
Jul 10 - Brain MRI normal
Dec 10 - PET scan NED
Dec 30 10 - Last Herceptin
Feb 11 - Port removed

Dear Mary Jo,
I am so happy for you!!! I am glad you will not have to see your onc that often now, that will bring a lot of peace of mind. I had my gallbladder removed because of stones one year ago also by laparoscopy, peace of cake, 2 hours after surgery they put me to walk, and although I had to have a special diet, I did not suffer from any pain at all. I am sure you will be fine. Once again, I rejoice with you with the good news. Sending you a ciber hug.
