Smile The Emergency Preparedness Corner

Hi Team! I hope you are all feeling well tonight. I just wanted to start a new little thread that I feel may benefit all of us in some way. The theme is.....survival. When you hear or read that word, "survival", what happens within you? Many experience shortness of breath and a quicker heart-beat, and picture some sort of death-struggle. A slight panic response. Let's throw all that nonsense into the ocean. Survival is nothing more than prevailing in any given situation. With a little preparation, we can all increase our chances of survival in any given situation. And behind every pair of eyes reading these words is a survivor, straight up, no doubt, or you would not be here. Right? Right! So let's get to it. We live in interesting times. We appear to be approaching a severe unavoidable world-wide depression. That's okay, and we can all get through it together, with a little preparation. My thought here was to throw out a few tips and y'all can chime in with others.

Several years ago, after 9/11 actually, I began buying an extra can or two of food and keeping them in a spare bed-room. I would recommend that to everyone now, for two reasons. One, you have a nice supplement if you have happen to run low one week, and two, this time next year, that same can of stuff will be 30-40% more, at least. If you are dependant on a municipal water supply, please stock up on bottled water and purchase a back-packing type water filtration system. All you have to do is buy an extra can or two of store-brand food every time you shop for groceries and in no time you have a nice little supply if something were to happen

The next pandemic, probably the H5N1 bird flu virus, is a matter of "when", not "if". Please get ready for it. I'm not trying to scare anyone, but please be prepared. Worse case is that the government, and alot of businesses and non-essential health-care facilities will close to halt the spread of the virus. My advice to everyone- every chance you get, ask your doctors and all chemo. nurses and health-care providers what their plan is for when the pandemic hits. You guys need to have a plan B if the chemo. centers have to be shut down. If we get enough people out there asking for a plan, we can get something done. To the best of my knowledge, right now, in the event of a pandemic/major epidemic, chemo. centers might just close and try to ride it out. They're not even training for that scenario. Correct me if I'm wrong. Ask around and post back here.

Bill, you are so wise. I grew up during WW11 so I know about food shortages. We always have a good supply that we can survive on. We also make sure our children and Grandchildren do the same thing. Believe me it was no fun growing up in these years not knowing if you were going to eat that day, Blessings and hugs to you Bill for bringing this up. Jeanette

Bill,

First, please pray really, really hard that no disaster will happen on April 2nd when I will have my surgery. Wait, the hospital should have an emergency generator - so I guess the surgery was covered. What about the chemo sessions? Please pray that no natural or man-made disaster will last more than 6 months ...

I'm sorry, my intentions weren't to scare anyone, but only to encourage us to stock up a little bit on some of our basic essentials. Jackie, you will be in our prayers, now, and on April 2nd. I'm sure all with go well with your surgery.

Bill, my first thought was to stock up on blessed memories. I would like to be able to eat, but keeping my mind fed with special memories seems to be more important now. I think I'll pick up the pace on contacting ol' friends and be better at staying in touch with my pals. Great idea, Bill. Keep the ol' mind thinking. ma

Boosting this one up in anticipation of the up-coming flu season, only H1N1 is now the threat.

Re: The Emergency Preparedness Corner

Bill
Believe it or not, my husbands employer sent kits to every family of there employees. The kits contaoned antibacterial wipes, masks, gloves, kleenex, Relenza and or Tamiflu for each person...this was all in preparation for the avian flu...guess it might come in handy if needed for the H1N1. The are a huge electric utility...guess they want their Nuclear Plant employees to show up for work, even if there is a pandemic!

I remember the scare during Y2K...people stocked up on batteries, flashlights, generators, food....I have always kept an ample supply of most things, including a stash of bottled water, thanks for the reminder...i may need to check and replenish.....I also like your point about checking to see if the hospitals/chemo centers have a plan...I am amazed that flu shots are availabel at Jewel and Walgreens, but not at the cancer center YET!!!!

Wink Re: The Emergency Preparedness Corner

It is always good to be prepared and have a plan about what to do in emergencies, especially now with all the earthquakes, tsunamis, snow storms, tornadoes, wars and other emergencies happening all over the world.
By the way, whatever happened to Bill who started this thread?
