2009 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium
I am curious about the 2009 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. I have read many posts with information that was presented at this event in previous years, so it has peeked my interest, especially since I live just an hour and a half down the road. Is this something that just the ordinary BC survivor like me can attend? I looked at the website for this year's symposium (Dec. 9 - 13) and I see there is a registration fee. The cheapest is for patient advocates. What does one have to do to become one of those? I am definitely interested in this and would appreciate any info from those of you who have attended it in the past.
I know this sounds early, but my calendar for the fall is already starting to fill up and I just happened to think about it.

9/15/08 (age 52) - Mammo: calcifications
9/22/08 - Biopsy: DCIS, grade 3. ER,PR status: Pos. in 75-90% of tumor cells.
10/01/08 - Ob/Gyn appt.: found complex, mostly cystic mass on right ovary - 11cmx12cmx 8cm
10/15/08 - Hysterectomy & Oophorectomy, Lumpectomy: Cyst on uterus, not ovary - all was benign. Breast - 5 of 6 bad margins. 2 Sentinel Lymph nodes removed, both negative. Stage 0, Tis, N0
12/11/08 - Mastectomy & DIEP reconstruction: Surprise! 2 cm Invasive DC, grade 2 found. One benign internal mammary lymph node. Stage 1, T1c, N0, all clean margins. ER+ (Proportion Score = 2/5, Intensity Score = 2/3) and PR+(Proportion Score = 3/5, Intensity Score = 2/3)
HER2 score = 3+
1/09/09 - Oncotype DX: Recurrence S/core of 60 !?!?! ER status is NEG!! PR staus is NEG! HER2 score = 12.2 (still positive, greater than 11.5 is positive).
1/20/09 - Started chemo: TCH
5/26/09 - FINISHED CHEMO!
1/05/10 - FINISHED HERCEPTIN!
1/22/10 - Port-a-catheter removed!
3/07/18 - Still NED
9/10/23 - Still NED

I have attended the last two years as a representative for Joe and Her2support.
This year I am hoping to pay for myself to go on my own accord (Joe needs to spread the love around to other deserving ladies on the boards) - so, this is a good question for Joe.

Jan'04~ Taxotere/Adria/Cytoxan x 6, NED, no Rads, Tamox. 1 year, Arimadex 3 mo., NED 14 mo.
Sept'05~ micro mets lungs/chest nodes/underarm node, Switched to Aromasin, T/C/H x 7, NED 6 months - Herceptin only
Aug'06~ micro mets chest nodes, & bone spot @ C3 neck, Added Taxol to Herceptin
Feb'07~ Genetic testing, BRCA 1&2 neg
Apr'07~ MRI - two 9mm brain mets & 5 punctates, new left chest met, & small increase of bone spot C3 neck, Stopped Aromasin
May'07~ Started Tykerb/Xeloda, no WBR for now
June'07~ MRI - stable brain mets, no new mets, 9mm spots less enhanced, CA15.3 down 45.5 to 9.3 in 10 wks, Ty/Xel working magic!
Aug'07~ MRI - brain mets shrunk half, NO NEW BRAIN METS!!, TMs stable @ 9.2
Oct'07~ PET/CT & MRI show NED
Apr'08~ scans still show NED in the head, small bone spot on right iliac crest (rear pelvic bone)
Sept'08~ MRI shows activity in brain mets, completed 5 fractions/5 consecutive days of IMRT to zap the pesky buggers
Oct'08~ dropped Xeloda, switched to tri-weekly Herceptin in combo with Tykerb, extend to tri-monthly Zometa infusion
Dec'08~ Brain MRI- 4 spots reduced to punctate size, large spot shrunk by 3mm, CT of torso clear/pelvis spot stable
June'09~ new 3-4mm left cerrebellar spot zapped with IMRT targeted rads
Sept'09~ new 6mm & 1 cm spots in pituitary/optic chiasm area. Rx= 25 days of 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the tumors.
Oct'09~ 25 days of low dose 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the bone mets spot on rt. iliac crest that have been watching for 2 years. Added daily Aromasin back into treatment regimen.
Apr'10~ Brain MRI clear! But, see new small spot on adrenal gland. Change from Aromasin back to Tamoxifen.
June'10~ Tumor markers (CA15.3) dropped from 37 to 23 after one month on Tamoxifen. Continue to monitor adrenal gland spot. Remain on Tykerb/Herceptin/Tamoxifen.
Nov'10~ Radiate positive mediastinal node that was pressing on recurrent laryngeal nerve, causing paralyzed larynx and a funny voice.
Jan'11~ MRI shows possible activity or perhaps just scar tissue/necrotic increase on 3 previously treated brain spots and a pituitary spot. 5 days of IMRT on 4 spots.
Feb'11~ Enrolled in T-DM1 EAP in Denver, first treatment March 25, 2011.
Mar'11~ Finally started T-DM1 EAP in Denver at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center/Rose on Mar. 25... hallelujah.

April '06 Rt Modified Radical Mas, 7 of 9 nodes positive
April - Aug. '06 Herceptin/Taxol/Carboplatin X 8 (dose dense)
Sept - Dec. '06 Navelbine/Herceptin x 8 (dose dense)
Radiation & Herceptin Jan. 22 - March 1, 2007
Finished Herceptin Dec. 10 '08! One extra year.
Port removed August, 2012.
8 1/2 years since diagnosis! 5 1/2 Years NED!

Once again this year, we will pay for registration to the event for up to 6 of our members.
This is only for tthe registration, travel, hotel and food is not included. Check with your local Komen affiliate as many have travel scholarships available for this purpose.

I don't have a problem paying for travel, food, etc. Depending upon the schedule, I might even just make the trip back and forth for some of the days so I don't have to worry about the hotel costs which would be the biggest expense. Or my hubby might go with me and we could enjoy a mini-vacation in San Antonio.
I also don't mind paying the registration fee, as long as it is just the $65 for the patient advocate category. I'd rather let the 6 spots go for someone else who is already having to worry about the travel costs, etc. What got me was what it said about the patient advocate category on the registration site . . . "Must provide name of organization you are representing". I didn't know if I had to officially apply to represent this forum, (I can't think of anyone else that I would represent), or if you were limited to the # of PA's you could have representing you.
I would love to be of help in promoting the forum as a way to pay back all that the forum has done for me. It would also be great to learn firsthand about the newest research and trials. Not only that, I think it would be so much fun to actually meet a lot of you in person and get to spend quality time with everyone.
That is more my question, what do I need to do to become a patient advocate so that I only have to pay the $65 fee, and what do I need to do to represent the forum.
Thanks everyone! Right now with as hot as it has been in Texas, I am wishing it were December already  . It is also the girl scout in me that gives me the urge to "Be Prepared"!

Just indicate on the registration that you represent the HER2 Support Group. And PLEASE use your own address.
We are not limited to the amount of registrations, but just have limited funding available.
As I said previously...Check your local Komen to see if they provide scholarships.

I have seriously been giving thought of going too. I will have to fly down from Indiana. I bet its fun and we will learn a lot. I really want to meet some of you guys.

Alamo scholarships to SABCS
Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation offers a generous scholarship program for advocates. In addition to covering your costs, they have orientations and nightly mentor sessions to help make sense of all the information that you glean during the day. And at those sessions, you meet advocates from all over who are doing all kinds of interesting things. It's a nice way to ease into what can be a pretty overwhelming symposium. An Alamo scholarship is how I got there, my first year (2003).
Also, if you're interested in the science, look at NBCCF (National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund) and their Project LEAD trainings:

Both have scholarships available.
There is a growing need for informed breast cancer advocates in so many arenas - gov't agencies and clinical trial boards are two good examples. Much of the work can be done from home, now that it's so easy to set up webinars and teleconferences. I encourage you to get the foundation by participating in one or all of these programs, so that when the opportunity arises, you'll be ready!
