Jane is having her 3rd chemo treatment today...TCH-Perjeta. We have an appt at Johns Hopkins in a couple of weeks for a 2nd opinion on how to proceed after chemo. Right now the plan is for lumpectomy or masectomy, total dissection of the axillary nodes and then radiation. She hopes to be able to avoid the allixary dissection and maybe just do radiation. She would also prefer to have a reconstruction at the same time as her masectomy, which is the option she is leaning towards. The surgeon here advised against the the reconstruction at the same time as the masectomy. He prefers the patient to have radiation then the reconstruction. We'll see.

She has done well with her 2 chemo treatments so far minus the 4-5 days of feeling absolutely terrible.

Hi Stephen,

My doctor also advised radiation before reconstruction, which is what I did. I actually have not done any reconstruction.

There are two reasons to do radiation first - 1) they can better target the area they need without reconstruction to work around and 2) the radiation can change the skin and the reconstruction may not look the way you want it to after radiation. You might want to consult with a plastic surgeon now also to get his/her take.

My attitude in general was to be super aggressive up front, so I did EVERYTHING I could , and maybe I overtreated, but I am here.

11/06 Bilateral Mastectomy (no choice on the right, my choice on the left)
Taxol+Herceptin weekly x12, continuing with Herceptin, finished one year in 12/07
33 Rads
Femara for 5+ years, staying on (started with Arimidex, switched after about a month, much happier)
Abnormal brain MRI shows no cancer, but "extensive white matter diease" - unknown cause
BRCA negative - lots of cancer in my family
survivor of thyroid cancer
also have Crohn's disease
CT and bone scan say NED as of 5/13
dx with severe cardiomyopathy 5/12 (likely due to chemo and Herceptin), ejection fraction in low 20's, now up to 40, went to 50, latest read 12/13 is back down to 35
1/13 Acute pancreatitis - are you kidding me?
9/13 started Humira for Crohn's. starting to have some energy again
B12 and Vit D both needed supplementation
Cataracts in both eyes noted 6/12 - surgery in the next 2-4 years?
4/14 Kidney stones/blockage/infection - related to Crohn's Disease
5/14 My aunt passed away - she was diagnosed after I was with Stage I - not Her2+, then Stage 4 for about one year
6/14 Scans - still NED, thank God. However, broken rib (I didn't notice) lots of bone degeneration osteopenia/osteoporosis. I also still have cardiomyopathy secondary to chemo.

I just went back to read your earlier posts - why is she so concerned about the lymph nodes being removed? I haven't missed them! But seriously, she has cancer in three nodes, that's a good reason to get them all removed. Even if the chemo knocks them back - I'm in the better safe than sorry club.

Has she had the BRCA genetic tests done yet? Those tests can provide vital information that could help with your decisions.

7-20-16 Prolia injection for severe osteoporosis
2 days later, massive hive outbreak. This led to an eventual dx of Chronic Ideopathic Urticaria, an auto-immune disease from HELL.
6-14-17 12 YEAR CANCERVERSARY!!
still suffering from CIU. 4 hospitilizations in the past year

as of today, 10-31-17 in remission from CIU and still, CANCER FREE!!!

Hello again and thanks for the responses. Her concern with all the lymph nodes coming out is the possibility of Lymphedema down the road.

She did have the BRCA test and everything came back negative

Stephen,
I to was concerned about the Lymphedema ( still am) . When I finished my chemo and bmx I had no positive nodes, however based on the aggressiveness of my cancer and the recurrence rate all recommended they get removed. I pray I never have to face the issues of Lymphedema but more then that I pray I stay NED. I get where your wife is coming from but unfortunately cancer doesn't . You two have many decisions a head of you and I'm wishing the best for all.

11/24/14 CT of Brain clear
01/23/15 One year Herceptin Complete
02/04/15 Diep done
5/01/15 1 year Ct scan- mass in thymus
6/23/15 repeat CT mass in thymus still present
6/30/15 biopsy thymus 7/03/15 mass Benign! Diagnoses Thymic hyperplasia rebound ( chemo at fault, no long term health effects)
7/08/15 phase 2 diep
11/23/15 phase 2b ( reconstructive surgery with lipo)
03/05/18 Vinnie Myer 3 D nipple tattoos complete.
11/19/2018 5 years since Dx of IBC stage 3c remain NED.
11/19/21- 8 years today I officially remain NED and in 12 days I will be having a lymphnode transfer to help decrease some mild lymphedema! Still working, living life and soon to see a day I thought never would happen and that’s becoming a grandparent June 22nd.
11/19/2023 - 10 years since diagnosis and I remain NED
