Re: Changes to my Navelbine & now side affects...

Chelee: I too am on "NavelBIND!" I get Aloxi by IV push and 4mg of Decadron for the nausea. I am a delicate GI flower and anything that can upset a GI tract hits me hard. So far, not a hint of upset in the stomach. I do get acid reflux (long time issue for me) and I have to stay on Protonx or it will rear it's ugly head.

I am also on iron supplements three times a day. I call this the "poop no more" regimen. I take Latabacillius to promote the good bacteria every day along with 2 stool softeners and that works well for me once things get going. When the damn dam won't break, I take Miralax (takes a few days to work) Sennacot-S AND two stool softeners. Usually have results within a day or two. I stay on the Miralax for a few more days and then drop back to the 2 stool softeners (Colace). As long as I eat my bran cereal, some fruits (especially watermelon) and drink a cup of coffee each morning, I can usually go with just the stool softeners. If I miss even one day of regularity , I add in the Sennacot-S for a day or two. I like being able to adjust what and how much I take. I find I don't want to eat when I am backed up.

I have had a impacted bowel in the past and they gave me a milk and molasses enema! What a combo, worked ASAP and as a bonus it smelled like cookies when I was done!!!! A maybe, if you get desperate!!!

Hope things get moving along for you. Maybe you can ask about getting Aloxi at your next treatment as well. I don't like taking the Zofran and Compazine since it makes me tired, so I am glad the Aloxi does the whole job.

Hey, shit happens, or so we hope!!!!!!

Darlene

Re: Changes to my Navelbine & now side affects...

Darlene,
Why the iron supps 3x/day?
Unless severely anemic, a fair amount of concern out there about supplementing iron in cancer patients. A small amount of anemia might actually be helpful. My apologies if I already brought this up elsewhere.

Re: Changes to my Navelbine & now side affects...

Hi Rich: My RBC, H&H have been low due to the Navelbine. They talked me into Aranesp a few times and I decline it as often as I can. Over a month ago, my MCV dropped and continued to do so. They ran an Anemia Panel and told me to try the supplement and if I couldn't tolerate it or it didn't give us results they would consider iron infusions. My RBC, H&H are still low (but not as bad) and my MCV has been holding in the normal range.

As always, thanks for your eagle eyes and kind interest. Always interested in your wisdom.

Darlene

Re: Changes to my Navelbine & now side affects...

Hi Chelee - sorry I'm a bit late coming to this thread - are you still on Navelbine every two weeks? How was your last PET scan? My first onc put me on Navelbine every two weeks without any pre-meds, and the only GI SE I experienced was diarhea that night and a bit into the next morning. I did experience pain in the infusion arm (my port had gotten infected) so the nurses infused an entire bag of saline along with the Navelbine to help prevent the veins from burning. When I switched to a new onc, without telling me, the nurse gave me an anti-nausea steroid (I think it was Zofran). For the next 3 days I was experienced painful constipation - I took a strong laxative which finally helped on day four. So after that I told the nurses that I didn't need the pre-meds, I'd rather just live with the diarrhea than the awful constipation.

I do hope you're feeling better - and I'm sorry I haven't been around much these days.

Re: Changes to my Navelbine & now side affects...

Darlene & Kathy, This is an older thread of mine that was brought forward by a "spammer". I noticed it the other day. They were trying to sell software or something...obviously Joe deleted his post which still left my thread here. I am no longer on Navelbine. But Darlene...love the name NavelBIND...boy isn't that the truth!! lol
