Bone Scan Appointment
I was able to see my primary care doc this afternoon, and did not have to drive 285 miles to my oncologist. After describing my femur (thigh) pain and hip pain, she ordered a bone scan. So, my complete bone scan will be on Friday afternoon. Please join me in praying and/or believing that I have no bone mets! Since I live in the southwest, and will be passing through Border Patrol check point to eat dinner in Alamogordo, I will have to carry a letter that says I have radioactive serum in me for 48 hours. Any experience with this protocol?

I'm praying for you. As for carrying a letter for 48 hours - I have never had that happen to me. I just had my bone scan 3 months ago and also have had numerous PET scans and never have I been given a letter stating I had radioactive serum in me. I've always gone right back to work. Hoping and praying your bone scan turns out okay. Cathy

Herceptin weekly for 1 year - finished 8-13-12
Arimidex started Feb. 2012 for 5 years
Left prophylactic total mastectomy March of 2012
Arimidex stopped August 2014 due to side effects
Aromasin started Sept. 2014

Thank you ladies for the prayers. God listens! I found my answer about the border check point. For those of you who do not live in the SW, it wouldn't bother you. Going north, northeast, and west out of Las Cruces, we must pass through a check point. Here's the info:
After a bone scan, a small amount of the radiotracer remains in the patient and emits radiation. The amount is very small, and patients are safe to go about their routine activities after the procedure. However, it is important to keep in mind that patients may set off sensitive radiation detectors at border crossings for several days after the procedure. Getting a note from the clinic performing the procedure that includes the study performed and the radiotracer utilized can help prevent any false alarms by security personnel. Also, it is recommended to avoid close contact with a child for 1 hour after a bone scan with Tc-99m MDP; there is no restriction for patients undergoing a bone scan with F-18 NaF.

Currently taking Arimidex..
June 2011 osteopenia/ zometa x1 yearly- stopped Zometa 2015 as Dexa show normal bone density.
Stopped Arimidex July 2014- Restarted Arimidex 2015 for a further two years on the advice of my Onc.
2014 Normal Dexa scan
2018 Mammo all clear, still NED!

4/30/13 Begin Kadcyla/TDM-1
8/16/13 PET scan "mixed," with some areas of increased uptake, but also some definite improvement, so I'll stay on TDM-1/Kadcyla.
11/11/13 Finally get hormone receptor results from lung biopsy of 4/2/13. My cancer is no longer ER positive.
11/13/13 PET scan mixed results again. We're calling it "stable." Problems breathing on exertion.
2/18/14 PET scan shows a new lesion and newly active lymph node in chest, other progression. Bye bye TDM-1.
2/28/14 Begin Herceptin/Perjeta every 3 weeks.
6/8/14 PET "mixed," with no new lesions, and everything but lower lungs improving. My breathing is better.
8/18/14 PET "mixed" again. Upper lungs & one spine met stable, lower lungs less FDG avid, original tumor more avid, one lymph node in mediastinum more avid.
9/1/14 Begin taking Xeloda one week on, one week off. Will also stay on Herceptin and Perjeta every three weeks.
12/11/14 PET Scan--no new lesions, and everything looks better than it did.
3/20/15 PET Scan--no new lesions, but lower lung lesions larger and a bit more avid.
4/13/15 Increasing Xeloda dose to 10 days on, one week off.
7/1/15 Scan "mixed" again, but suggests continuing progression. Stop Xeloda. Substitute Abraxane every 3 weeks starting 7/13.
10/28/15 PET scan shows dramatic improvement everywhere. All lesions except lower lungs have resolved; lower lungs noticeably improved.
12/18/15 Last Abraxane. Continue on Herceptin and Perjeta alone beginning 1/8/16.
1/27/16 PET scan shows cancer is stable.
5/11/16 PET scan shows uptake in some areas that were resolved on the last two scans.
6/3/16 Begin Kadcyla and Tykerb combination
6/5 - 6/23 Horrible diarrhea from K&T together. Got pneumonia.
7/15/16 Begin Kadcyla only every 3 weeks.
9/6/16 Begin radiation therapy on right lung lesion that caused the pneumonia.
10/3/16 Last of 12 radiation treatments to right lung.
11/4/16 Huffing and puffing, low O2, high heart rate, on tiniest bit of exertion. Diagnosed as radiation pneumonitis. Treated with Prednisone.
11/11/16 PET scan shows significant improvement to radiated part of right lung BUT a bunch of new lung lesions, and the bone met is getting worse.
11/22/16 Begin Eribulin and Herceptin. H every 3 weeks. E two weeks on, one week off.
3/6/17 Scan shows progression in lungs. Bone met a little better.
3/23/17 Lung biopsy. Tumor sampled is ER-, PR+ (5%), HER2+++. Getting Herceptin and Perjeta as a maintenance treatment.
5/31/17 Port placement
6/1/17 Start Navelbine & Tykerb

Well,, I had my bone scan, but still don't know the results. The tech did rescan a close up of my pelvis. I do know that my femurs did NOT "light up", so I think that is good. I have to wait until Wednesday to get the results.

2/14/2014 2 mets on pelvic bone
Stop Anasterole continue on Herceptin and Zometa start radiation (again)
2/24/2014 start T-DM1 continue Herceptin and Zometa
4/28 more radiation that brings total to 5 (10 days ea) - I think I will soon glow in the dark....
6/01/2014 Great news! Rib mets gone, 4 of 5 spine mets showing new bone growth and pelvic mets shrinking.
8/28/2014 T11 on spine is being stubborn started Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa and Taxol - goodbye hair!
9/04/2014 Tomo therapy - pain finally gone
1/3/2015 - starting New Year out as still stable. Feeling positive
2/23/2015 - problems with left leg, bone met flaring up - MORE radiation Whew!
2/24/2015 Stress fracture in right side of pelvic - (great just great) back to wheelchair then walker then.....
2/26/2015 Off Taxol!! Still on Perjeta, Herceptin and Hormone Blocker starting to feel a little more human.
4/10/2015 Cancer has spread to spinal fluid - not sure where I go from here

I doubt the border patron agents know anything about radioactive anything!
I live in San Diego and travel often to Mexicali- - my former home town, sometimes the agents have no idea what they are talking about. Born and raised along the border, seeing it all.
Do you have to disclose that you have radioactive meds in your body?

2013 December Continue Herceptin and Perjeta. Stable at the moment.
2014 February Brain MRI -clear!
2014 January Added Taxotere to Perjeta+Herceptin.
2014 March Stopped chemo-chest ct-scan next.
2014- March Scans shows tumor's larger, CA2729 higher. Discontinue Herceptin.
2014 April Perjeta+ Halaven
2014 April CA2729 went down 60 points after one cycle. Cough does not want to go away.
2014 June Continue on Perjeta + Halaven-- no more cough. Stable
2014 June Back on Herceptin + abraxane

Yes, I "set off" the thing they wear around their neck, when he stuck their head near our car window and ask if you are US citizens (just like the bone scan tech said I would. I guess they check for radioactive things being transported). I just showed him my paper from the imaging center, and all was ok.
