Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

My next acupuncture appointment is next Wednesday. Hopefully it will make a difference.

I used to take a multi-B vitamin, but I was told to stop while on chemo, as it could interfere with the chemo. I was also told to stop taking Vitamin C while on chemo. If it gets worse, I should ask about the magnesium by injection. Right now, I’m just taking it via pill. I am also experiencing joint stiffness, although it’s not as bad as it was after my first round of chemo. The magnesium injection might be just what I need.

12/15 – First mammogram
01/16 – Second mammogram and ultrasound.
01/16 – Meet surgeon and go for third mammogram, second ultrasound and biopsy. Surgeon confirms cancer in left breast and lymph nodes and sets surgery date.
01/16 – Chest scan and bone scan done– all looks good.
02/16 – Surgery - left breast mastectomy and 16 lymph nodes removed (8 had cancer).
02/16 – CT scan done – small nodules on lung but Doctor advises it’s normal. They will continue to monitor just in case.
03/16 – Meet radiation oncologist and find out results of Pathology Report. I’m told that I have locally advanced breast cancer, based on the size of my tumour (7 cm!) and the fact that they found cancer cells in eight lymph nodes. I’m also told that I’m HER 2 positive, and that my cancer is stage 3, grade 2.
03/16 – Meet oncologist and am told that my cancer is actually grade 3, and that I should have done chemo before surgery. Too late now!
03/16 – Start first of six doses of chemo (Carboplatin and Docetaxal) and Herceptin (for one year).
04/16 – Have port put in.
04/16 – Get second dose of chemo, but Docetaxal is left out due to liver enzymes being high. I was unable to get a full dose of Docetaxal after my first treatment.
06/16 – Finished chemo! One month off and then I start radiation.
06/16 – Start Tamoxifen.
07/16 – First radiation treatment – 24 more to go!
08/16 – Went for Genetic Testing to see if I have the BRCA gene.
08/16 – Radiation oncologist biopsies “scar tissue” on my scar.
08/16 – I am told that I have a “local recurrence” and need to have rush surgery.
09/16 – Meet surgeon who advises that I need to meet with a plastic surgeon, as they will need to do a skin graft to close me up after surgery.
09/16 – Go for rush ultrasound, bone scan, breast MRI and CT scan.
09/16 – Meet plastic surgeon and all looks good. A surgery date is set for October 4.
09/16 – Meet oncologist who advises that the ultrasound and bone scan results look good, and that MRI shows three small masses at surgery site, but lymph nodes are clear. Still awaiting the results of the CT scan, but we are positive it will look good.
09/16 – Get a call from my oncologist, who advises that CT scan shows small spots on my lungs, and a large lymph node in the middle of my chest. This means the cancer has spread! She looks into getting me funded for TDM1 and cancels my surgery.
10/16 – Meet oncologist, who advises that I have to take Perjeta before I can take TDM1. I start Perjeta/Herceptin every three weeks for an indefinite amount of time, and Taxol, which I will take two weeks in a row with one week off and then two weeks in a row for 8-16 treatments.
10/16 – Stop Tamoxifen.
10/16 – Meet surgeon, who reviews my CT scan and advises that the spots on my lungs may not be cancer, and that he doesn’t see a lymph node in my chest. He thinks it’s a spot on my lung. I’m feeling very confused! He advises that my oncologist doesn’t want me to have surgery to remove the three small masses on my scar line, as she wants to use them as a way to determine if the treatment is working. He advises that if they have not shrunk in 6 months, he will revisit surgery.
10/16 – CEA blood test to determine Tumour markers. Results were normal (2.7). My doctor advises that this could mean two things: (1) that the treatment is working, and the tumours are shrinking, or (2), that I'm one of those people who never get elevated CEA levels. Given that some people never get an elevated CEA level, this test doesn’t seem very accurate to me! Asked for PET scan, but am told I don’t qualify.
10/16 – Brain MRI – NED!
11/16 - CA-15-3 blood test – Tumour markers are normal at 19.
11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
11/16 – CT Scan scheduled for November 22. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

My neuropathy was worse last night then it’s ever been. I seem to be able to control the foot spasms with magnesium, however, this does not seem to help with the neuropathy. I could feel the tingly feeling going up my left leg last night, and, I felt like I was walking on pins and needles. At one point, my left foot felt like it was on fire. I don’t think I can take another six doses of Taxol if this keeps up. I think I’m going to email my doctor this morning, and ask her if I can change chemo the next time I’m in for treatment. It’s not just the neuropathy that’s getting worse, but it’s also the shortness of breath, the dry, bleeding nose, the light-headedness, and yesterday I even had a bit of an earache for a while (although I don’t know if this is chemo related). There has to be a less toxic chemo that I can take, at least for a little while. Otherwise, I may need a break from chemo until January.

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I got a call from the hospital this morning telling me that my CT scan scheduled for tomorrow has been rescheduled until December 14. I called my nurse practitioner to find out why, and it turns out that the scan scheduled for tomorrow was for the chest only, and my doctor wants a scan of the chest, pelvis and abdomen. I have to say I’m a little annoyed by the lack of notice, and I really don’t want to wait that long to see if the medication is working, but what can you do.

I told my nurse practitioner that my neuropathy was getting worse, and that it’s starting to shoot up my leg, and she told me that if it keeps up, they will have to lower my dosage of Taxol. She also told me that if my CT scan shows that the medication is working, that it shouldn’t be a problem for me to take a break from chemo during the Christmas holidays. I’m really hoping my test results show that the medication is working, as I can really do with a break from chemo! The neuropathy is really starting to get to me, and I hope I notice a differences after my second treatment of acupuncture.

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I would be annoyed as well.
We build ourselves up to scan dates and just want them done!
Surely it doesn't take much longer to arrange & scan chest/pelvis and abdomen than chest only!

Hope your next acupuncture helps and that you can have chemo break at Xmas!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

That’s what I said, but I was told that they are booked solid, and that they could still do the chest scan tomorrow, but that I’d have to go back on December 14 in order to scan the abdomen and pelvis. As my doctor wants to limit the amount of radiation I’m exposed to, they decided to just reschedule all three for the same day.

My second acupuncture appointment is this Wednesday. I hope it helps too, otherwise, I don’t know if I’ll be able to put shoes/boots on after my next dose of chemo. At least they are open to changing my dosage if the neuropathy keeps getting worse. I’m really hoping that my scans show that the medication is working, so that I can take a break from chemo over the holidays!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

Makes sense re radiation but annoying that they couldn't give you an extra few minutes to do all tomorrow. I'm in and out scan in 10 minutes here - mind you they sometimes keep you waiting for ages & it does feel like a bad production line!!

A few months ago I found a website about neuropathy - I will try to find details & notes I took about supplements.

Thanks Jules. I’ve been looking online as well, but haven’t found much. Vitamin B, which I can’t take while on chemo, magnesium, which I’m already taking, and warm baths are the suggestions I’m finding. I’ll keep looking though.

Thanks Juls. I’ll look into it.

On another note, I got the results from my BRCA I and II genetic testing, and I tested negative for both. This means that my cancer is not hereditary.

11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
12/16 – CT Scan scheduled for December 14. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

Hi
That's great news about your BRCA test. It's one of the many things that are not routinely tested here!
It is one of my Daughters concerns - she goes to a private Doctor due to hormone problems (no Dr here can help) & because of my history he decided to include iodine, amongst other things, in her supplements. Maybe I should do private test!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

The BRCA test is only covered in Ontario if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer (or prostate for men). My aunt died of ovarian cancer about eight years ago, and, at that time, they would not test her for the BRCA gene because there was no family history of breast or ovarian cancer. The only reason they tested me is because my aunt had ovarian cancer, and because of my age. I am only 41, and most young women who get breast cancer have the BRCA gene.

My oncologist told me that she wanted to send me for other, less popular, genetic tests once we got the results of the BRCA tests. I’ll have to follow up with her when I see her next Tuesday.

You should look into getting tested for the BRCA gene through a private doctor. If you test positive, then your daughter should also get tested. My friend’s mother had breast cancer years ago and survived, only to get ovarian cancer five years later, which she died from. My friend tested positive for the BRCA gene, and got breast cancer at the age of 31. Because she has the BRCA gene, they removed both of her breast, and will be removing her ovaries in a few years. I asked to have my other breast removed, as well as my ovaries, and they told me they would only do so if I tested positive for BRCA I or II. Because I tested negative, I doubt they will remove them.

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

Hi
Until I was diagnosed there was no family history of cancer. Then last year my 23 yr old niece (my sisters daughter) diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Ovary removed and no further treatment required. Just caught in time!
When I mentioned this to Onc. team there was no concern!

On the plus side my Niece was told she might not be able to have a family - She had a baby 3 weeks ago!!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I’m glad to hear that they caught your nieces cancer early, and that she’s doing well today. She would be a good candidate for the BRCA test, given her family history (her aunt having breast cancer) and her age. Do you know if she’s ever looked into it?

Congrats on your new grand-niece. I’m glad that cancer didn’t destroy your nieces chances of having a baby.

Hi
Don't think she has looked into it & think we should. Could be a strong link as an Aunt on her Fathers side died a few years ago from Breast cancer. So a link both sides!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I had my second acupuncture treatment yesterday, and I have noticed a difference in my feet. I still have a little bit of a tingling sensation, but, my toes are no longer numb. That being said, I don’t have treatment this week, and my neuropathy is usually worse after treatment. I’ll have to wait and see.

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I went for treatment yesterday, and my doctor also lowered my dose of chemo yesterday to 75% to see if it will help with the neuropathy. She also gave me a medication that I have to take twice a day, which is supposed to help with neuropathy. I left the medication at home, so I can’t remember the name of it right now. We shall see if it helps.

12/14/15 PET scan: NO PROGRESSION! THP is working, metabolic activity minimal. Merry Christmas to me! Sticking with PLAN A, it's working.
1/7/16 Start Taxol weekly instead of Taxotere (has been too taxing and not rebounding between txs.) Zometa instead of Xgeva.
3/28/16 CT shows new sclerotic lesions on T12, L3, L5, L6, right ilium and head of right femur. No uptake on Bone Scan (progression????)
3/31/16 Discontinue Taxol start Arimidex, still getting H&P.
6/2/16 Discontinue Arimidex and start Exemestane.
6/18/16 PET is NEAD!!
7/1/16 Discontinue Exemestane and restart Armidex (SEs)
8/29/16 CT/Bone Scan Stable (still uptake at T10-11)

10/10/16 MRI: Brain clear!
10/14/16 Switched care to Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care
11/24/16 Xgeva, New MO preference to Zometa
12/12/16 CT/Bone scan Mostly stable significant uptake at L2 plan to PET
1/12/17 PET shows NEAD celebrate with a new puppy!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

The good news is, my neuropathy is much less severe after this week’s treatment, however, I don’t know if it’s because of the acupuncture, the prescription my doctor gave me, or because I got a lower dose of chemo this time around. Regardless, I’m just happy that it’s not as bad this week as it was two weeks ago.

¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
Tested negative for BRCA I and II
11/16 - CA-15-30 blood test – Tumour markers are normal at 19.
11/16 – Second CEA blood test – Tumours markers are still normal at 1.6
11/16 – Second CA-15-30 bloot test – Tumour markers are still normal at 19
11/16 – Develop lymphedema and have to wear a sleeve
12/16 – CT Scan scheduled for December 14. I can’t wait to find out if the Perjeta is working!

Re: Acupuncture for Neuropathy

I’ve decided to put acupuncture on hold until I’m done chemo. If my neuropathy doesn’t subside after chemo, I will try it again to see if it helps. Right now, it’s hard to determine if it’s working, because my doctor lowered my dosage of Taxol and gave me medication to help with the neuropathy. It’s been better during the last few weeks, but we don’t know if it’s because of the acupuncture or the lowered dosage of chemo or the medication. So, I’ve decided that I don’t want to spend the money on acupuncture right now because we can’t determine if it’s working or not.
