Men's health article for caregivers

Interesting article below. I can agree that I am stressed. But, at the same time, I don't feel like I can complain since I'm not the one with cancer. Anyone else affected by this? And how are you coping?

Caring for wife with breast cancer can affect men's health:

Re: Men's health article for caregivers

I worried a lot (and still do) about my husband's health when I was doing treatment. He's an extremely caring person and literally forced me to stay alive a few times. He also was an air traffic controller and then tower manager in his 37 year career with the FAA so stressful environments have always been part of his daily life. During my treatment months he did usually do a few stress reliever things - going to the driving range, playing golf with our son while I was getting chemo, working in the yard, etc. In spite of all that, in one of our more serious discussions I told him I would rather be the one with the cancer than the one watching someone I love have cancer. It's such a mean beast and effects the entire circle of family and friends.

Re: Men's health article for caregivers

Thank you. i am currently undergoing treatment. I am VERY concerned for my husband's well being. I wish he had someone here he could go to beers with, go hiking with etc., who understood what he is going through. I wash there was a male support group for husbands with wives with breast cancer.

Re: Men's health article for caregivers

My life-long brain tumor was diagnosed two years after my husband and I had our wedding. Already an overly-cautious person, hubby was constantly worried about whether or not I'd burned down the house or getting hurt because of my cognitive problems. (Ever watched 'Fifty First Dates'? There are quite a few familiar scenes ...

11 years later, he had to take me to Dallas to undergo GKRS for three of the new growths. Then boom! Two years later I was diagnosed with breast cancer!

Two years after my initial diagnosis of breast cancer, hubby experienced angina while doing his daily walk (no longer able to jog due to runners' knees) My late Mother-in-law (1927-2008) had had a heart attack 12 years prior, and hubby has been on high blood pressure medicine since his early 20's.

So he went through operation to get two stents put in his arteries and continued to walk daily - per his cardiologist's advice. Guess what happened next? I had a recurrence and lost my job again - this time permanently! So what's hubby to do? He's sent to a psychiatirst to get evaluated, prescribed some better 'anxiety pills', and had regular meetings with a therapist who reassured hubby that he's not 'crazy' considering all he/we had been through. "Trust me, I've seen 'crazy'..."

And we don't even have kids! Yes, it will take its toll...
