Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Hi Jean,

I just saw the posting.

I guess so far am the oldest stage IV on the site.

July 2003. Only God know how long I had the tumor, just not dx'ed.

Stage I -- June 1994. Found a lump on my way to Hawaii--my honeymoon!
Waited until November to see a doc. Oficially dx in December 94.

Currently doing well on the TDM1 Trial.

Love,

Adriana

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

I was diagnosed stage IV in February of 2007. There is some doubt as to whether I was stage IV or not but so far I'm still here!

Jan. 26- mammogram and ultrasound- suspicious lump
Mid-February- lumpectomy, infiltrating ductal carcinoma ~4.5 cm and a 1 cm DCIS, did not get clear margins, did not check lymph nodes
ER+/PR+, her2 +++, nuclear grade 3 of 3
February 20-PET scan showed something on liver. No biopsy.
March- Started carboplatin, herceptin, taxol on a four week cycle
May 3- Pet scan, with intent to do a biopsy, found nothing, liver or breast- no biopsy because there is nothing to biopsy
June 21- new onc, very concerned that there had been no biopsy,
June 18th-CAT scan, bone scan-negative
August 7th - Brain MRI-negative
August 9th- mastectomy, all pathology negative
January 2008 still NED! New oncologist -herceptin for full year after chemo- until July, and tamoxifen---negative scans since May '07
July 2008-Finished Herceptin!

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

DianaMK,
For us that are stage IV the standard of care is to stay on Herceptin for the rest of our life. And yes...you should be encouraged by that as we have so many ladies on this board that have done their chemo and maintained and stayed NED on Herceptin alone.

Stage 4 Since Aug 2006. Mets to the liver. I have been on four different combinations with herceptin and tykerb. Started Halaven Dec 2010, and now adding tykerb back in to the routine. Still working and making the most of life. God is faithful.

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

I haven't got round to setting out my journey - it seems to have been so much part of my life. It all started out in 1990 with first recurrence in 1996 and from then on seemed every couple of years till I moved to stage IV in 2002 with extensive spread to my bones. Have been through so many chemos and by 2002 I was on xeloda and had to come off that after 2 cycles because of too many se's. Went on to Navelbine which seemed to work (this could be seen by the reduction of the lymph node swellings all around my neck. But at end of chemo they were back . It was then that they checked out my her2 status and found it to be her2+++ and I went on herceptin. The effect was instant - those lymph nodes all went down - even to the point that I got full movement in my neck back again - I had probs turning side to side. Since 2004 I have been on just herceptin & pamidronate and latterly zometa every 3 weeks. Generally keeping ok but last 3 years problems with a tumour next to my lumbar spine causing nerve pain problems. But given I have clocked up 21 years with bc I am not doing too badly living with it.

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Dear all ladies,

I am here for my mom , she is 63 years old and newly diagnosed as BC , stage4 and liver mets ( multiple), the biggist one is 7cm .
But she is also a Hepatitis B Virus(HBV) carrier , she is asian .

My question is : the diagnosed date is on March 17 and hosipital will start the chemo therapy on April 16 , will this time too late ?due to we want to join a clinical trail.

I feel much better when i know there are so many stage 4 women hanging over there , because my mom gets so upset and depressed once the dr. said she only got 2-3 months to live.

Thank you all .

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Hi, Vivienne,
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother's diagnosis. But tell her to hang in there! Through you, she can get a lot of inspiration from our stories and successes. It's such a blow to get a diagnosis such as this. Where are you located? I think treatment is starting within a reasonable amount of time, that's about how long it took me to get started. Is mom HER2+? I'd be depressed if my doctor put a timeline on me, too...I'd tell your mom to tell the doctor, "Watch me!"
Hugs and welcome,
Karen

Brain MRI: clear.
January 2012: NED. Liver mets, good riddance!

January 2014: Ablate Little Met on the 6th. Happy New Year.
March 2014: Brain MRI: clear. PET/CT reveal liver mets return; new lung mets. This is not funny.
March 2014: BEGIN TRIAL #10-005 A(11)-Temsirolimus plus Neratinib.
April 2014: Genomic testing indicated they could work, they did not. Very strange drug combo for me, felt weird.
April 2014: Started Navelbine and Herceptin. Needed something tried and true, but had significant progression.
June 2014: Doxil and Herceptin.
July 2014: Progression. Got nothing out of it. Brain: NED.

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Hi Ladies:

I was dx Stage 3C in beginning, 2005. I'm triple +. Surgeon said my bc was missed for 4-6 years on mammo's due to dense tissue. Devastating for sure. I went to mets (liver and soft tissue) in 2010.

End of 2010, major progression in liver and onc wanted ALOT of tx to stop it. Per signature below, I did and it's working. I was in a tight, tight spot last Christmas, but now feel there's hope - especially w/all the new her2+ drugs coming out.

Onc wants me to stay on this tx for 4 more rounds - as it's going well. Ixempra/Avastin first tx to touch my medistanil mets (by the heart) in 2 years - reduced it 40% in 4 rounds, and reduced liver mets by 50% as well.

It's not easy, but there's hope.

Diagnosed stage 4 IBC 5-28-10. Received 5 chemos treatments, mastcetomy, then three more chemo treatments. Went for radiation after and will be on Herceptin the rest of my life and zometa for 2 years. Recent pet scan 4-01-11 shows no sign of cancer at this time. I missed one day of work. Enjoy life.

I was diagnosed with multiple liver mets (largest 9cm) in 2006. I'm still enjoying life but have had lots of treatment since then. There is plenty of reason to hope. All the best,

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Diagnosed in April 2005 with stage 3C, then stage IV in November 2005, with mets to lung and liver. Have been on different treatments all these years. Liver mets are gone, but lung mets are still here. Now on Halaven and Herceptin.

Smile Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

I have followed this site for my wife and used it to pass on all the good news that I received from it. My wife is a 11.5 year surviver. She was 51 years old when Breast cancer struck her in 1999. After standard treatment the cancer re-appeared one year later in her spine and lungs. Her Doctor then did another pathology test on the breast tissue and determined that she could quilify for a new drug called Herceptin. That drug along with Zometa has kept the cancer at bay or stabilized for 10 years. I know that Herceptin along with lots of prayers and family love as well as using this site to pass on hope has kept her alive to enjoy our 8 grand children, five of them born after her first diagnoises. She is still with us this mothers day and doing fine. She wanted to pass on to all of you that one of the key pieces of advice she gleened from this site was the information to keep using fish oil and COQ10. Two years ago she got a low MUGA score and the doctor was concerned and thouht he would have to stop the Herceptin treatment. After reading one of the posts on this site I told her about the use of fish oil and COQ10 used by some of your members. She took another MUGA test 3 months later and her heart was back up to satisfactory strength and she has not had a problem since. I just wanted all you wonderful fighters out there to know that there is hope and everyday you fight and live is one day closer to the cure. When my wife was first given the bad news there was only Herceptin. Now there are two or three more drugs of choice to fight with. My wife's doctor has said that she will out live him espcially now with all the options he has to go to in the future. God bless you all and all the support you give to all of us and that includes us husbands who use this site also.

From one loving husband.

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Dear ladies.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate this thread. I just joined yesterday. My initial diagnosis and treatment was in 2009 but a nasty recurrence this April has bumped me along the staging scale and I'm very aware of my mortality. Every day is precious and I thank you all so much for reminding me that many more precious and fulfilling days/months/years are possible.
Much love

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Introduced this thread to one of our new members. Then I noticed SoCalGal's tally (145 years for all 33 members) Thought I'd double check and add the others following her posting. And I came up with 220 years and three months. I also noticed that many other Stage IV sisters are not on the list - the founder of this support group, Christine (12 years) and AndiBB (13 years), to name a few.

And it suddenly downed on me that I myself have survived my first diagnosis of stage I for 8 years. My recurrence in 2007, a Stage IIb, was caused by a series of failures of the medical staff - the surgeon thought she had had a clean margin, she didn't; the radiologist thought the shadow on the mammograms was 'scar tissue', it wasn't; my family doctor thought I was hypochondriac, he was wrong ...

Will I have another recurence and become stage IV one of these days? Nobody knows. But just knowing the fact that so many of our stage IV sisters have beat the odds/on maintenance/receiving active treatment gives me confidence that whatever happens in the future, there is hope.

Thank you, stage iv sisters, for sharing your fighting spirit and triumph with us.

Re: Calling all stage iv sisters

Thanks, Jackie07, for directing me to this thread. Very encouraging to see so many people living with stage iv. I was initially diagnosed on 4/1/11 with stage iv, and I went through a few weeks thinking I had an immediate death sentence. With a 7 year old daughter, that is not what I wanted!
I just had my first set of scans since starting treatment and have had a wonderful response to weekly Taxol and Herceptin. I hope to continue that path and be one of the lucky ones who lives with stage iv for a long time. I am currently reading "Her-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer" and it is also giving me a lot of hope!
Thanks, ladies, for sharing your stories of strength!
