My sister was diagnosed the week of Thanksgiving this year and is doing Really Well! As her younger sister I am interested in knowing more about her type of cancer and my doctor couldn't find much. Is there a blood test that can be done to detect it by chance?

Hi Polly,

I am glad to her your sister is doing so well. HER2 is diagnosed from the original tumor. They usually send it in for IHC and if positive they send out for a FISH test to see how strong HER2 is. The report usually comes back with + signs, 3 being the highest I have ever heard of.

There is a lot of research going on right now with HER2. It is an oncogene, that everyone has and my understanding is for some of us, it just goes nuts and causes cancer.

I don't know what you are exactly asking for. If you could be more specific with your questions this board has a plethera of information they would be happy to share with you. Only 30% of women with BC have HER2. We are all here to support and inform so please don't hesitate to ask any questions that you have. Take Care k
