My surgery decision
Hi all-
I am just plugging along with my weekly Taxol treatments. I will be on these until the end of April. I have my surgery the week of May 25. I plan on enjoying a glorious Memorial Day with my kids, sisters and friends. We are having a parade and a big, fun neighborhood block party with the street shut down, a happy train and oodles of comfort food. Then I go in for my bilateral mastectomy on Tuesday.
I made a very important decision after countless hours of praying and meditating. I am NOT going to reconstruct. I know from my surgeon’s experience this is not common. I am 43, tall and very thin. I have never liked my big boobs. I am excited to get my surgery completed and get back to some semblance of normalcy in my life, although I know it will never be the same. My new normal will include (at some point after healing) jumping on the trampoline with my precious children without pain/discomfort. Hey, it’s the little things in life! J I may even take up running.
I know this will be a tremendous adjustment. I wrapped myself up tight with ace bandages for a week to see how it felt. It didn’t really work but it was worth a try.
This was a long decision-making process for me. I wanted to share my news with all of you. Thank you for your loving support!!!

Hey Mo, I was just thinking of you today. I, too, decided against reconstruction, which was a good thing since I had so much radiation I wasn't a candidate after all. My husband likes the lopsided me ( even when I had 2 boobs) so it has been a no-look-back, no regrets decision. I'm always happy to hear how you are. Great news that you are planning happy times to take into surgery with you. I wish you all the best and congratulate you on a decision you are at peace with.
I also had a double and no reconstruction. I was never thin, but my breasts were huge, and I have found it a relief in many ways. Note to those who are not thin - not having breasts does make that tummy pouch more prominent!
I can always change my mind and have reconstruction later if I feel like it -- but it's harder to undo. Same for you. Also, due to many abdominal surgeries, my only option for reconstruction is implants, and the whole idea makes me queasy:
the expanders - surgery 1,
the filling - every week?!,
the implants - surgery 2,
the replacement of implants - surgery 3, 4, etc, God willing I live long enough.
I felt like I needed all my energy for treatment and healing, and I'm still here, so it feels right for me.

Neoadjuvant A/C 4X Dose Dense
11/06 Bilateral Mastectomy (no choice on the right, my choice on the left)
Taxol+Herceptin weekly x12, continuing with Herceptin, finished one year in 12/07
33 Rads
Femara for 5+ years, staying on (started with Arimidex, switched after about a month, much happier)
Abnormal brain MRI shows no cancer, but "extensive white matter diease" - unknown cause
BRCA negative - lots of cancer in my family
survivor of thyroid cancer
also have Crohn's disease
CT and bone scan say NED as of 5/13
dx with severe cardiomyopathy 5/12 (likely due to chemo and Herceptin), ejection fraction in low 20's, now up to 40, went to 50, latest read 12/13 is back down to 35
1/13 Acute pancreatitis - are you kidding me?
9/13 started Humira for Crohn's. starting to have some energy again
B12 and Vit D both needed supplementation
Cataracts in both eyes noted 6/12 - surgery in the next 2-4 years?
4/14 Kidney stones/blockage/infection - related to Crohn's Disease
5/14 My aunt passed away - she was diagnosed after I was with Stage I - not Her2+, then Stage 4 for about one year
6/14 Scans - still NED, thank God. However, broken rib (I didn't notice) lots of bone degeneration osteopenia/osteoporosis. I also still have cardiomyopathy secondary to chemo.

Hi Moons!!
Just wanted to send a short note to you. I had my double mastectomy in June of 2006. I too had decided from the start that I wanted no reconstruction, no anything ... and I have not regretted that decision for a single moment since.
I, too, am tall (5' 11 1/2") and for most of my life weighed about 130-135 ... so was thin ... and I certainly wasn't flat ... rather "well endowed" for a tall person. The only thing I have noticed or been a little self-conscious about is now when I gain weight my belly sticks out further than my chest! smile! What a strange sensation!

Hi Moons! I, too, decided before my bilateral mastectomy that I would have no reconstruction. I have not regretted that decision for even a nano-second! Because I am a small person, now I can get kid's large T-shirts and save lots of $$$!!! Best of luck and keep in touch!

2002 recurrence. Bilateral mastectomy w/TFL autologous recon. Then ACx2. Skin lymphatic rash. Taxotere w/Herceptin x4. Herceptin/Xeloda. Finally stops spreading.
2003 - Back to surgery, remove skin mets, and will have surgery one week later when pathology can confirm margins.

3. increasing sclerosis & decreasing activity of L1 met “suggests” mild healing. (SUV 9.4 v 12.1 in May ‘13)

12/27/19 - begin ds8401a w nivolumab. after 2nd cycle nodes melt away. after 3rd cycle chest scan shows Improvement, brain MRI shows improvement, resolved areas & nothing new. switch to plain ENHERTU. after 4th cycle, PETscan shows mostly resolved or improved results. Markers near normal. I'm stunned but grateful.
10/26/20 - June 2021 Tucatinib/xeloda/herceptin - stable ish.

I, too, am tall and skinny (5'7", 124 lb) and did not have reconstruction. I had been flat-chested all my life and been wearing padded bras. After the bilateral mastectomy, I did not have to change anything. All the old ones still fit.

Maureen, it is always nice to get the the point of finally making the committment and decision. I always felt the transition time of trying to decide on which option to take was tough.

I'm glad you're happy with your decision. There's not one answer for everybody, and it seems like you really thought it through.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Thank you all!
It is such an interesting phenomenon that people are so liberal with their “if I were you”s. Everyone has thoughts on my decision and most are very eager to impart their opinions...many in disagreement with my decision. I am sure all the unsolicited advice comes from a loving place, even if it does cross boundaries. I am happy to say it has not diminished my peace in the least. I know I am doing what is right for me personally. Oh, and can I just tell you, thin or not I am a woman and have the poochy pouch that will no doubt stick farther out than my chest...it almost already does. LOL!!
I know you all must have at one time or another experienced this.

I agree with you. I just had a bilat mastectomy in January and no reconstruction. I like it. I have the belly pooch too so now I look a little pregnant, but I'm working on that, and now it's easier to work out without the bounce!

Diagnosed 8/7/08 with stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, micropapillary pattern, Her2 3+, ER+,PR-, grade II, positive lymph nodes.
Received 6doses of Taxotere, Carboplatin with Herceptin continuing for a year...DONE.
1/28/09 Left Modified Radical Mastectomy, Right Simple Mastectomy.
Surgery pathology: No invasive carcinoma present and 17 lymph nodes removed all negative! Only small amount of carcinoma in situ in left breast.
March/April '09, Radiation to left chest wall.
Currently involved in Neratinib clinical trial.
