Herceptin was approved in September 1998, it was fasttracked by the FDA after the June ASCO meeting where the results of the phase III trial was given.

Red face FDA approved Herceptin in October 1998

Iwanted to let you all know the date. It was an important date for me when I became Stage 4 in 19999 a few months after FDA approval of Herceptin for metastic patients. It's all a dream that came true.
Thanks everyone
Hugs Christne

Smile My Experience...

I was dx in '95 and then recurred in mid Aug, '98. Found to be HER2+, as they were then testing for this. I had to request it! 80% positive. That's how they tagged it back then.

Herceptin was fast-tracked by the FDA due to demand and made available to all metastatic bc patients September 28, 1998. I began taking it in Nov., after 8 wks of Taxotere and CT scans to be sure it was working. It was. I remained on H till late this past July.

How lucky can a stage 4er get??? Just in the nick of time -- to save my life. After 12 yrs of unyielding determination and brilliance on Denny Slamon's part.

That first pic of Dennis, w/wife and Barbara Bradfield -- is that a halo around him???

With love,

'98 -- multiple mets to liver. HER2+ 80%. ER/PR- Raging, highly aggressive tumors spreading fast. New PORT. 9 mnths Taxotere Fought fire w/fire! Pronounced in cautious remission 5/99. Taxotere weekly for 6 wks, 2 wks off -- for 9 mnths. TALK ABOUT GRUELING! (I believe they've altered that protocol since those days -- sure hope so!!)
+ good old Vit H wkly for 1st 3 yrs, then triple dosage ev 3 wks for 7 yrs more... The "easy" chemo, right?! Not a walk in the park, but not a freight train coming at 'ya either...

Added Herceptin Nov '98 (6 wks after FDA fast-tracked it for met bc). Stayed w/Vit H till July '08! Now I AM FREE! Humbly and eternally grateful for this life-saving drug! NED since '99 and planning on keeping it that way. To hell w/poor prognosis and nasty stats! STOPPED VIT H JULY '08...! REMAIN STABLE... Eternally grateful...Yes is a world & in this world of yes live (skillfully curled) all worlds ... (e e cummings) EVERY DAY I BEAT MY PREVIOUS RECORD FOR # OF CONSECUTIVE DAYS I'VE STAYED ALIVE. I thought the movie was a good portrayal, except for the part where they say "Herceptin has no side effects" Of course I would still do it again even though I had trouble w/ heart function. I can't blame that all on Herceptin. I think Adrimyacin had a significant role in my heart issues. Also, I would make sure I walked every day (As my Oncologist recommended-He was even willing to write a prescription for me to golf once a week) I am sure that would of gone over like a lead balloon at work. My husband started silently crying while watching the movie. You know the sniff, sniff, I got something in my eye kinda crying. It did make me more determined than ever to participate in whatever trials are available if/when I get to the stage IV club. I really want to feel like I have contributed in some way to the next generation out there facing this craziness. Peace Karen

My incredible sister not only taped the movie for me on Tivo, but she also taped it on VHS!!! I got to watch the movie Saturday night when I got to her house after midnight. I haven't looked at the tape yet and I forgot it in Connecticut, but I'll get it next weekend. If the tape is good, I would be more than happy to put it on DVD. We can pass the DVD and VHS versions around. Just let me know which version you want. Send me your address privately and I'll make a list of where it will go next...I will also inquire about posting it on utube or a similar site. I don't want to infringe on copyright laws or anything.

Maryann,

I may have to take you up on your offer. We have direct TV and of course, now we can't get it to tape the show. I will of course, pay you. I'm off now to see if it is working. Please keep me updated.
