Wink

I havn't had a recurrence, but I think this is an important question, so I wanted to bring it back to the top. When I asked my onc about tests, scans etc. one of her comments was " we gave you the chemo most likely to kill the cancer so if there is a recurrence what could we give you. If it didn't work the first time It won't work a second time." That being said, I have read on this site about many that have had recurrences and are doing well. I would like to have more amunition for my onc in case this should happen. Don't get me wrong, I just think that they are people too and can't know everything.

More details needed...

You might want to give some information about the details of your cancer, which you can put in your signature. (That is done in "User CP" located on the purple line at the top of this page.)

The type of treatment given for the cancer that has returned, depends on the make-up of the tumor. Those that have a similiar tumor to yours, can give you a more specific answer that would be of more benefit to you.

My recurrence was in the dermal lymphatic (skin) in the chest wall, so it was a regional recurrence.

My original treatment was mastectomy followed by dose dense AC.

My current treatment is radiation followed by Taxol & Herceptin, or TCH. Even though I recurred while on Herceptin, both 2nd opinion doctors agreed there could be efficacy when combined with another drug. My original doctor said she would not recommend Herceptin again, but would recommend Taxol, then Tykerb. The problem is there is no known treatment length for adjuvant Tykerb.

When I finish rads on 6/5 I will get some scans, then meet with my oncologist to decide what chemo I should have.

My recurrences were treated with Herceptin and sequential chemo's, usually the chemo being given for 6 months at a time, then a break until activity showed again. This strategy has worked for over 6 years to keep me either in remission or with stable disease. See my signature for more details.

Herceptin has served as the "Backbone" of my treatment strategy for over 6 years, giving me great quality of life. In 2005, I was privileged to participate in the University of Washington/Seattle HER2 Vaccine Trial.
