Turmeric/Curcumin and the tummy
To those of you who take a turmeric/curcumin supplement..........
Any tummy issues? It didn't seem to bother me initially but the other day - I was vaguely crampy all during the night - almost like period cramp type cramping but kind of like the feeling we get when we experience diarrehea. I've heard about tummy issues taking this supplement so quit taking it now for 2 evenings with my dinner and the problem is gone. So, I am sure that it wasn't a "bug" but the turmeric/curcumin. Any of you cut it in half and only do half a capsule or does this eventually subside as your body gets use to it?
Thank you .....
Mary Jo

I have been taking 4 capsules before I go to bed for 2 years now and have never had an issue. I also take 4 green teas and 4 grape seeds. But, I also knock myself out with ambien before I go to bed, so if my stomach bothered me, I may not know it...sherryg683

Tumeric/curdurmin are a hot spice and should be eaten with food or it may burn a hole in the stomach.

I found this on the Sloan-Kettering site.
Derived from the rhizome and root. This supplement is routinely used as a spice and coloring agent. Oral administration is well tolerated, but bioavailability is relatively low (5) (15). Following absorption, turmeric is rapidly metabolized. In vitro and animal studies suggest anti-proliferative and preventative effects of turmeric against cancer ( 10) ( 11) ( 12) ( 13) ( 16) ( 17). Results from a pilot study indicate that it may help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome ( 14). No significant adverse events have been reported. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders should not take this supplement. Recent animal studies indicate that dietary turmeric may inhibit the anti-tumor action of chemotherapeutic agents such as cyclophosphamide in treating breast cancer ( 3). More research is necessary, but it may be advisable for breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to limit intake of turmeric and turmeric-containing foods. Data from an epidemiological study are suggestive of improved cognitive performance in elderly Asians who consumed turmeric in the form of curry powder ( 18).

Those of you taking Tumeric as a dietary supplement or herb, are you still having Herceptin treatments? I have taken a few capsules but now wonder if I should back away until my treatments are completed.
Thanks,
Dana

DanaRT - top marks for an informative post with links built in (but were they meant to all go back to the same page. I suspect not .
IBS looks like it has at least an inflammatory element so a "Cox" blocker arguably would help.

Dana - Herceptin is not a chemotherapy and does not work in the same way a chemo does...The best way to use Tumeric is just a little in your soups, sauces and salads. It won't upset your tummy and no one else knows it's there (and they get the benefits). Glad your feeling better.

R.B., I simply cut and pasted a portion of the link from Sloan-Kettering. Perhaps I did not offer enough credit to who wrote the paragraph. Then I posted the webpage link. Is this a forum "no, no" ?
Thanks, madubois63, I knew Herceptin is not a chemotherapy but the technicial verbage throws me off sometimes. I plan to sneak Tumeric in to the family diet!

I am sorry no negativity was implied I was being genuinely complimentary . It must be something to do with the way they structure their web site that takes you back to the disclaimer page - or maybe I did not look closely enough and the page leads somewhere else. Clink on the links and you will see what I mean.
I have just had another look -- OOOPS. MY MISTAKE !!! SORRY.
SILLY ME - If you click on the accept terms and conditions at the bottom of the page it then takes you to the right link.
It is fine to post links on the site we all do it.
