Lani, Rich or others opportunity for advocates

Dear Breast Cancer Advocate,

Today we are bringing you some exciting news about our premier breast cancer science course taking place this summer – the Project LEAD® Institute.

The Project LEAD® Institute is NBCC’s intensive, five-day science course for breast cancer advocates covering cancer biology, genetics, epidemiology, research design, and advocacy. This course is designed to provide advocates evidence-based scientific cancer knowledge upon which participants can strengthen and empower their work as research advocates.

If you have a serious interest in scientific study, in preparing yourself for participation in the policy-setting and decision-making roles of research advocacy, and in finding your integral place in the work on the Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® initiative, don’t miss your chance to apply to NBCC’s Project LEAD Institute. This summer's institute will be the only in-person Project LEAD course available in 2012.

The Institute will take place July 22 – 27, 2012 in La Jolla, CA. The application deadline for the course is June 18, 2012. Scholarships for those in financial need are available. The course is free to NBCC members and annual membership is only $35. To apply, please complete the application form found on the NBCC website.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Thank you,

Annette Bar-Cohen, Executive Director
Center for NBCC Advocacy Training

Re: Lani, Rich or others opportunity for advocates

Thanks for posting this. This is a great seminar for anyone interested in knowing more about breast cancer science. I took the international course given in Cancun, Mexico last year and it was a very interesting and rewarding event. I strongly recommend it for any one of our members.

I took this course last summer in La Jolla, Calif., and also recommend it.

Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

Interesting. Due to the big C, can't plan beyond next week. But definitely interested if stars align.

Re: Lani, Rich or others opportunity for advocates

Birthday celebration for Nina that week. We thought that she would not see the end of March based on her December 2011 diagnosis. Work would not let me go any way due to all the PTO being used up. I have a ton of thoughts that I would love to exchange, but Nina time is most important!
