Novel Agents for Advanced Breast Cancer

Several abstracts described new agents in development for the treatment of refractory breast cancer. Eribulin mesylate is a synthetic analog of halichondrin B, a microtubule inhibitor. A phase 2 study[7] analyzed the effect of eribulin mesylate in chemotherapy-refractory metastatic breast cancer. In this trial of approximately 100 women, there was an average of 5 prior chemotherapy regimens (including adjuvant treatment). The overall response rate was 11%. A slightly higher response rate was seen in women treated on a 2-weeks-on, 1-week-off schedule, compared with the 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off schedule. Neutropenia was the major grade 3 or 4 toxicity, though 5% of patients also had grade 3 neuropathy.

Sounds like you have alot of questions for your oncologist so you can make an informed decision.

I remember when I was dreading hair loss, my oncologist simply said "it grows back". And as sad as it was to loose my hair, she was right of course. It is a reversible part of the process.

Let us know what you decide...
