Osteoporosis - Post menopausal bone loss

I will post any links if find on Omega three and six and bone loss to this thread to try and keeps things in one place that is easier to find.

I post it here as osteoporosis is an issue that affects so many women, and has particular relevance in BC.

A number of trials suggest DHA may assist in maintaining bone density.

"Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) are involved in the regulation of bone metabolism."

"In conclusion, DHA ameliorated OVX-induced bone mineral loss. GLA exacerbated post-OVX bone mineral loss, possibly as a result of PTH-induced bone catabolism."

Yes, a lot of us are thrown into early menopause and bone loss due to cancer treatments. Anything natural to boost the bone density is prudent.

You have to read this carefully as it is not very clear.

"Therefore, the fish oils DHA and EPA and perilla oil depressed excretion of urinary Ca and inhibited osteoporosis due to restricted food intake."

"Fish oil rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) protects inflammation induced bone loss in chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis, and osteoporosis."

"Our findings suggest that DHA may be much more effective than EPA in alleviating RANKL induced proinflammatory cytokine production, intracellular signaling activation, thereby decreasing osteoclast activation and bone resorption."

"Preliminary, data have suggested that a diet with a low n-6/n-3 ratio may have beneficial effects on bone mineral density. Further studies are, however, required to fully assess the dose and type of PUFA to be used for optimum bone effects. This may be useful particularly for the prevention of disease in the elderly, since a diet rich in n-3 PUFA has been shown to have additional benefit on the cardiovascular, central nervous system and joints."

"This study showed FO decreased bone loss in ovariectomized mice because of inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. This finding supports a beneficial effect of FO on the attenuation of osteoporosis."
