Arimidex and Chemo

Does anyone know of a problem with taking an AI (like Arimidex) at the same time as chemotherapry (such as Xeloda) for ER+/Her2+ mets? Would it be somehow counterproductive?

Taking chemo and an antihormonal at the same time in Stage 4 disease is standard of care.

It is counterproductive in early breast cancer care where one would receive chemo first (and then possibly rads) and after that, then take an antihormonal.

If your sister is getting Xeloda and an AI and your signature on her history is correct, she is getting the right advice (taking them at the same time) as she has Stage 4 disease.

If she and you are not comfortable with this, you should get a second opinion.

Thanks for responding, Becky.

One of my sister's oncologists is suggesting that the anti-hormonals will slow down the fast-dividing cells that the chemo is trying to kill (and therefore the chemo won't be as effective). Sounds reasonable, but, as you've said, it seems as though in Stage IV chemo plus hormonals is the standard of care.

Any thoughts?

Amy
