Taking the drug right before going to sleep vs the morning is helpful. Otherwise, oh well. It gets better as time goes on and is much worse the first few months.

Take heart. In time it will improve. If it is unbearable for you, I have heard that Effexor helps but I have no first hand experience with it.

Susan,

Jill had lots of hot flashes when she started Tamox. She still gets them but not as bad. She takes her Tamox around 8 pm - she says they seem to hit worst about 1-2 hours after taking the meds.

We are all SOOOO different!!!!

I find that if I take my Tamox in the AM -I do much better than if I take at night. I also take Effexor with my tamox. Generally, Effexor is given for depression, but behold! it also is given for hot flashes. I take 1/2 dose (37.5 mg)... I did find that when I took the generic Effexor, it was not as effective.
Now I rarley get hot flashes and I feel that 1/2 dose of Effexor is enough for the hot flashes and also not too much to make me lose "libido".

I hate taking extra meds... but the hot flashes were horrendous. I would be in the middle of a meeting and start sweating drops off my forehead... It would trickle down my back into my pants ... not a pretty sight. The sweating made me self conscious and then embarassement would kick in and make it worse.

Anyway, the Effexor is amazing. Only thing is that if you miss a day or two, the withdrawals are not good. Dizzy. My body always knows when I have not taken it because I begin to feel the flashes right away.

Hi,

I have been on Tamoxifen for a year now and although hot flashes and night sweats are not as frequent as a year ago, I am still experiencing several/night. My oncologist suggested numerous meds and vitamin E. I decided to try the vitamin E first. She suggested I start with 400 IU/day. I have only been taking E for a couple of weeks, but may have already seen a slight improvement.

Hi Susan,

After 9 mos, I still have hot flashes with tamox. I still haven't found the right time to take it. For me , the flashes occur randomly, almost daily, regardless of when I take it. Someone on this board at some point had said the flashes are telling you it's working.

My hardest flashes were doing AC, before Tamox. Keep in touch and let us know if you find something that works. BB
