Oh, Sheila, can any pain be as bad as that which comes to us when those we love so much are in pain and we can't help them. Only love them more. I can't imagine what it must be like to lose such a special friend as yours. What a treasure to have had each other for all this time and to have been there for each other as you fight the dreaded cancer battle.
