Australian scientists in cancer breakthrough

Australian scientists from Melbourne's Monash University have unveiled a breakthrough in the treatment of cancer.

Details were revealed at a bio-technology conference in the United States capital Washington.

Our correspondent in Washington Leigh Sales says the researchers say they have found a way to stimulate the body's immune system and make it produce more t-cells.

In trials in Melbourne the discovery has helped cancer patients make strong progress towards recovery.

Six top hospitals in the US and UK are now going to join trials of the treatment and Victorian Premier Steve Bracks announced the development at a major biotechnology conference in the US.

"It's certainly on the road to finding a cure for cancer " he said.

It's likely to be a couple of years before the treatment is commercially available. Leigh Sales Washington."
