If you are prescribed an opiate like Morphine you will develop tolerance. Every person is different. The wonderful thing about opiates is you can always increase the dose as needed and get pain relief. With other drugs you have what is called a ceiling effect. Im thinking of drugs like Ibuprofen (brand name Motrin). You can increase the dose of Motrin to say 800mg three times a day and get more pain relief, but increasing the dose more will give you greater side effects with no greater pain relief. With opiates you can keep on raising the dose as needed.
An effective way of using morphine is to use a dose of slow release Morphine every 12 hours whether you are in pain or not. I think this slow release form is called MS Contin.
Should you feel pain while on this continous Morphine Slow release therapy, called breakthrough pain, you can be given a dose of quick acting Morphine as needed.
