I was found to be Vit D deficient as well and have been on 2000 units of Vit D a day but over the counter. My calcium levels were way high as well as my parathyroid levels so they took out a parathyroid gland which ended up having a benign andenoma on it which was causing all the trouble. My calcium levels have leveled off but the doctors still don't want me on any calcium which worries me in regards to my bone density. They took a density test and sure enough I became slightly osteopenic which is a big change from previous density scans which were perfect and without any problems. It isn't all that unusual to be deficient in Vit D especially us midwesterners. It's good that they caught it though because we need Vit D for a lot of reasons.
