Lat Flap Recon

Going in for my 2nd attempt at reconstructing my radiated breast. I rejected the implant at 4 weeks and have been without anything for 8 months, definitely an experience in modifying clothes to create a sense of balance. I had my pre-op yesterday and must admit I'm not excited about the next procedure. I am looking for any advice or insight you can provide on ideas to make this next surgery as tolerable as possible. I understand the lat flap with expander is my best option, just a little overwhelmed.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Deb,
No wisdom...but lots of prayers and affection headed your way. Cancer sucks! Reconstruction sucks! You must be ready to scream, "ENOUGH ALREADY"!!

Thinking of you, and hoping this time things work out perfectly.

Re: Lat Flap Recon

Deb- I had the lat flap. The first couple of weeks are rough like any surgery. But the fact that it is only on one side unlike the double mastecomy was a benefit. I had to have an additional drain put in at the breast (one will be put in on your back) I had trouble with fluid retention with both surgeries. I would definitely ask your PS for a physical therapy referal since you are an active person. I waited and ended up with a tight shoulder capsule which limits my external rotation. Very important to strengthen your rotator cuff and mid trap and rhomboid area as these will be the structures that will now be supporting your shoulder complex. The lat tendon will scar up so the PT will need to work on that. Finding one that works with BC patients is a plus. I am happy with the end result. I can't do pull-ups anymore but oh-well. If you have any more question please contact me. Good luck.

deb - I had the lat flap
please don't let my experience scare/sway you but I have been having a difficult time with recovery. I think the most important thing you can do is what snolan suggested and get moving as soon as you are cleared to do so. I think my problems started because it took me a long time to move after the surgery because I had such a terrible time with the expanders (but you've done that already). You need to stretch/build muscle strength as soon as you are able - a good PT can help with this, I have found yoga to be extremely helpful aswell
good luck
