Stillhere's poll question #6

. . . . . .

as in nipple discharge?

If you are referring to Paget's Disease of the nipple, I DID have Paget's, but it doesn't necessarily manifest with bloody discharge. Mine was more like an excema- dry, itchy, stinging skin around the nipple. I thought it was excema or allergy to bra or detergent that I washed my bras in. Since I had always learned to look for discharge and not these types of symptoms, I had NO idea the first few months that it could be cancer. Not until I went for my yearly GYN exam.

Had the same symptoms for Paget's

Like you, BHutchison, I had the same dry, scaly, itching, stinging nipple on the right side. My mammograms were clean as was one ultrasound. When my nipple finally got red, I went for a biopsy with a dermatologist, since the ob-gyn, the im and one other derm. all gave me topical creams.

I was diagnosed in Dec., 2003 and had a mastectomy in Jan., 2004 along with chemo.

BH, can you tell me about the spot on your C2 neck? I've been having some aches in the C6 region and was told it was spinal stenosis of the cervical area, but they are going to give me an MRI. How did the find the spot on your neck and did you have any particular symptoms for that?

Hope you're doing well.

Vicki

We saw a spot around C2 last August on my PET, had not shown up on my bone scan 3 months earlier. No symptoms at all. Since we also saw the 3 nodes in my chest shining on the PET, and we knew I was going back on Taxol with my Herceptin tuit de suite - we didn't look at the neck/lower skull spot too much closer. We were confident that treatment would also keep it stable, if it indeed were a lesion. The same spot showed up again on my bone scan this past February, but neither PET or bone scan are good indicators of size or measurement, so my onc and I decided it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a measurement of it for a base-line. I go today for an MRI of the whole skull just to be sure that that little spot is all that is there and to see just how big it is.

Wish I could give you more.... but it is a quiet little spot, or so I hope.

Discharge, but not bloody

I had a constant discharge for over one year in the breast that ended up having cancer. That was the reason for mammograms every 6 months. The mamo showed calcifications but no signs of cancer. I'm sure the discharge was a sign that something was going on.

Oops, I may have voted twice, because I got this email notice again. I see I've already voted and responded once before regarding this.

This one brings up some memories!! I had bloody nipple discharge in November 2007 and was told my an OB-GYN (my doctor's partner) that I had fibro cystic breasts and that I should take 400 IUs of Vitamin E 2x/day!!!!! 2 months later Breast Cancer!! So maddening!

Yes, I had bloody discharge and my nipple was extremely tender. The discharge was very sutle and spontaneous. My family physician did a blood test on the discharge. I was put on an antibiotic for staph infection. One week later, no improvement so I insisted on a mammogram and the rest is history. Within 5 weeks I went from stage 0 to stage IIB - 2.4 cm tumor and I never felt a lump.
