Sore tongue from Herceptin?

Hi everyone

A friend of mine has been having herceptin for 2 years now, 1st year every week, and the 2nd year has been cut back to every 3 weeks. For the past few months, she has been experiencing a very sore tongue. She says it feels like it has been scalded by a hot drink, and makes it very difficult to eat. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

Love Lisa

Sounds like thrush??? Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. My onc prescribed "magic mouthwash" (yup - that's what it's called). I gargled with it a few times a day and it fixed the problem. Also, your friend may want to take acidophilus and/or eat some fresh cultured yogurt.

My mouth is always sore on Herceptin. I can even see bruises on my tongue if I eat crackers or potato chips. Sometimes the skin of an apple is enough to scratch the roof and sides of my mouth and the skin lifts off the roof of my mouth. In 4 1/2 years I have not found a solution, although I do know that my mouth is better if I stick to a really good diet and get plenty of exercise. I had really bad mucositis when I was on chemo. I just rinse after all meals, use a gentle toothpaste and restrict the foods I eat when my mouth is really sore. I'm also sure my mineral intake affects it.
I said goodbye to hot curries years ago!!!!!
