Micro Mets

Hi,

My wife has had a couple of small abnomilies show up in her bones that were not there in the first diagnosis for stage 3 Her2 pos high lymph node activity.

She finished her chemo/radio and herceptin treatment and had scans as a check up. These scans have shown what the onc refers to micro mets, one in the spine and one in the pelvis.

She has had a follow up scan 2 months down the track and these abnomilies have not changed.

Has anyone else had similar. could it be mets that were knocked off by the original treatment?

When I went through a similar scare the spots were too small to biopsy so we waited six weeks and did a PET/CT which was clear, that was five years ago, maybe ask for this type of scan or a biopsy if the spots are large enough but you need to know one way or the other if this is malignant or not.

If you're going to recommend it, Frank, you have an obligation to let everyone know your stake in it.

Well thanks Frank is there anything else you would like to sell me. This is a forum for people who have very real concerns and I might add a little emotionally vulnerable. It is not a place for you or any other company to peddle their wares. I don't know if your product stands up because doing a quick google search only comes up with a few results mostly information provided by your company. I did find this however which sheds a little light on your motivation http://minnesotabusiness.com/business-breast-cancer

Oh and Frank read my post again I was asking a question seeking advice from others affected by breast cancer.

Sorry about the rant, this guy is also on a number of other forums including Breastcancer.org 'advertising' his product.

Anyway back to the question...

Has anyone else had similar. could it be mets that were knocked off by the original treatment?

I don't think I've ever heard the term "micro mets" used to describe something that is visible on a scan. Usually, it refers to the cancer cells that are out there in the body (but undetectable with scans), with the potential to form metastatic lesions that ARE visible. Once they're big enough to pick up, they are mets.

If the oncologist believes what is seen on the scans is metastatic cancer, then wouldn't the usual thing would be to treat for stage IV cancer? Is your wife currently receiving any treatment? What kind of scans picked this up (bone scan, CT, MRI)? Did the oncologist discuss the possibility of a biopsy? It seems like it's important to clarify what, if anything, is going on.

As for your question about whether the original treatment knocked off the mets -- yes, it could be possible that they were knocked off/knocked back. But the ongoing management is different, once metastatic disease has been confirmed.
This might be a good time for a second opinion.

Good luck, keep us posted.
