Clinical trial targets breast cancer cells by injecting trastuzumab directly into the

In two to five percent of women with breast cancer, tumor cells migrate into the spinal fluid invading the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord called the meninges. While a rare complication, the condition is challenging because there is no agreed-upon standard of treatment, leaving little hope for patients affected. Northwestern Medicine- researchers are currently examining a novel approach to delivering an FDA approved drug that they hope will advance research for this type of cancer and lead to discoveries that may improve outcomes in the future.

This trial was used as the basis for treatment for my wife. We felt the dosage was a little lower than was effective in other literature so we went to his highest dose of 40 mg for four weeks and doubled that to 80 mg weekly for 8 weeks, and now are on every two weeks 80 mg. I can tell you that Dr. Raizer has 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 40 mg arms of this trial. This is a very worthwhile trial and will lead to additional work, we just felt like we could not wait. I respect the work, but if you have brain/spine involvement you cannot wait for higher dosage levels to be explored. Time to get to the right level of treatment as soon as possible. Excellent work by Dr. Raizer.
