Colon cancer risk

Just watched this slide show about colon cancer. Did you know that age (over 50) and breast cancer history constitute two of the four risk factors?

Slide 3 shows the 4 risk factors.

Re: Colon cancer risk

A number of risk factors increase the likelihood of developing colon cancer. A risk factor is something that increases your likelihood of developing cancer. Some risk factors can be changed (like diet) but others can not (like having inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]). Some risk factors for colon cancer are:
IBD: People who have IBD (Crohn's disease and ulceration colitis) are at an increased risk of developing cancer.
Age: Older people, specifically over the age of 50, are more likely to get colon cancer, but it can occur in younger people, too.
Diet: Studies have shown that a diet high in fat and calories and low in fiber can contribute to colon cancer.

Re: Colon cancer risk

Jackie,

Thanks for posting this. My dad's sister (at age 22) and mother died of colon cancer, and my mom's dad had colon cancer as well. I've wondered if having bc would increase my risk for colon cancer, but I always heard breast cancer was linked to pancreatic, ovarian and prostate cancers, and I hadn't heard about colon cancer. Thanks again for posting. The more information the better we can protect ourselves.
