Want a healthy heart? Go nuts!

http://wp.me/p14d35-cW

Here's a very basic discussion regarding consumption of nuts, fat, and cholesterol for those who may be interested.

So are raw nuts better for you than roasted nuts?
I like the roasted ones so much more

Henny,
That depends on who you talk to...for the most part, the research I've seen shows that raw nuts contain more nutrients than toasted. But the toasted nuts are still good for you. One exception to this - per my homeopath - is almonds. He says that sometimes it's harder for the body to use the nutrients in raw almonds.

To be on the safe side - if you toast them, do so only lightly. Do not add oil.

I like to eat almonds, walnuts and sunflower seeds, blended with dried fruit. In my opinion, try to eat a wide variety of different nuts and seeds, including roasted and toasted. Just avoid salted and smoked nuts. Aw man, one of the best things you can do on a lazy Sunday is to throw a bunch of raw almonds and walnuts on a sheet pan in the oven and toast them up, stirring as they brown, and then throw them into a bowl and munch away while they're still hot.

I throw a few unsalted nuts and unsalted pumpkin seeds into whole grain cold cereal with a few raisins or a banana. I add liquified yoghurt or almond milk and enjoy. Sometimes I put small container of mixed unsalted nuts into my lunchbox. I like walnuts, almonds, macadamia nuts and cashews best, but I also enjoy other nuts too.

I agree. Nuts are a great part of the diet, raw or roasted. They are excellent for heart health and cancer prevention. They can also be helpful in weight management as long as portions don't get carried away. I just made some homemade muesli with toasted slivered almonds-so good in Greek yogurt!

I've been eating walnuts since my initial diagnosis. At first my mother sent packages from overseas. Now our local grocery stores have plenty of them in different kind of packages and uncracked ones in bulk. Every morning I use about half cup for my cereal - along with raisins, sliced apple, orange, Flax seed powder and yogurt. I've been drinking much less milk these days, thinking the multi-vitamin and yogurt will provide enough calcium.

Almonds are another good source of calcium, as are poppy seeds. In fact, in Lithuania/Poland, etc., they make poppy seed milk.

I miss the 'Almond Tofu' (tastes more like gelatin)in Taiwan...

The Chinese think almond is one of the 'cold' food that can balance the 'hot' (usually 'poisonous') components in our body. It is supposed to be good for the skin [with some kind of 'detox' effect, I guess])

That makes sense, Jackie, because almonds are the only nut with a highly alkaline effect on human pH. Whereas most of the junky foods we eat are very acidic (i.e., sugar).
