Eyebrows

Has anyone had their eyebrows tattooed? Mine are sparse ever since taxotere, and I am thinking about having them tattooed.

I inquired at one place and they want $450. Doesn't this seem like a lot of money for two tiny eyebrows?

I've never had a tattoo, but as I understand it a person can get a pretty big tattoo for $450!

Thanks,

Rachael

I did not but my girlfriend did. It was pricy but you really need a pro to do it cuz it lasts forever but she looks fantastic.

Re: Eyebrows

I had mine tattooed on. None of my hair grew back after Taxotere. A family member paid for mine!
I absolutely love them! They makes me look so much healthier. Mine are not the solid tattoo, but she did the little strokes that look like hair. I do know that every couple of years you have to have them touched up. This doesn't cost as much though.
The girl that I went to was very experienced and worked on the shape and color with me before she started. It took awhile to get use to them, but I get so many compliments. They do look very natural.

Try "gimme brow" by Benefit before you do the tattoo. Mine are pretty sparse, too but I still have hope ( hope I'm not being a fool!).

Re: Eyebrows

Mine have been very thin and sparce also,my eyelashes were also very short, I am 2 1/2 yrs out since my last Taxotere and I noticed that they are finally getting thicker and longer. I have my beautician dye mine when I get my hair colored and it really helps. Someone told me about 3 years and you will really see a change. I didn't realize how much I missed them. Thank god our hair grows faster.

Re: Eyebrows

If you do it, be sure to see some real people the beautician has done and ask them what they think. It can work if done extremely well or look painted on and awful if not. Might be better to get an eyebrow shape that you can fill in with an eyebrow pencil yourslef then you can do it light for day, heavier for evening. I never did it. my eyebrows are still thin some 8 years later but I'm pleased I have no hair on my legs anymore.
good luck

After I got laid off from Genentech, I dusted off my cosmetology license and started doing eyelash extensions, permanent makeup, and nails. I went to 2 different schools and attended additional workshops. $450 is about the going rate. Ask for information about their training. The more the merrier. Also ask for before and after photos.

Taxotere left me with very sparse brows. I actually did my own. I think I am my best advertisement. My procedure is as follows:

Apply numbing cream (over the counter, bring Emla if you have it)
Decide on color while client is numbing
Wipe numbing cream and draw on eyebrows.
When the client agrees to the shape, I begin

The. Laws governing this type of work vary from state to state. Very few require a license.

@Kim in DC

How much do eyelash extensions typically cost?

Mine are so sparse. I had someone sit next to me on a flight and her lashes looked so fabulous. I complemented her and she 'fessed up.

Body hair in asian healing arts represents the health of the liver. Maybe a little acupuncture as well as eyebrow tattoos . . .

Re: Eyebrows

That's good to know, 'lizbeth, about the liver. My hair was growing back in at half speed, and I've never been a short hair person. The slow hair growth was agonizing to me, then I heard my husband say that his kidney stone herbal supplement was making his hair grow like crazy. So I tried taking it. It worked and I was peeing better to boot! Maybe kidneys are related too? Donna Eden says kidneys affect the hair on the head and something else (can't remember, probably liver, like you said.)

Kim, your eyebrows look beautiful! Definitely a testament to the procedure and to your work! Do you think $450 is a fair price for an initial application?

Rejoyce, I'm glad you like yours!

I have always been eyelash challenged, and now they are so short that I can't even apply mascara, so that may be next on the list. Maybe extensions or Latisse.

Re: Eyebrows

Eyelash extensions usually cost $200-$350 for the initial application. You will find that technicians who are "Xtreme Lash" certified will charge more because their training costs more. Unfortunately, with eyelash extensions, the results vary based on the condition of your lashes. It is a strand by strand application process. The tech will apply a single lash that is longer, thicker to your natural lashes. If you only have 2 lashes I can only apply 2.

$450 is a fair price for someone that is experienced in permanent eyebrows.

Re: Eyebrows

@Kim,

Now I am curious. How long do the extensions typically last? and how does one maintain the extensions?

@conomyself - give it up! what is the name of the supplement for the kidney stones. Did it help the head hair to grow thicker? or just longer?

Everything is interconnected in Asian healing arts. I am still looking for the info and the liver and body hair in my textbooks.
Under the DYSFUNCTION OF THE FIVE ZANG VISCERA chapter of a translation of The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine:

"The vessels correspond with the heart which manifests its essence in the facial complexion. However, the heart is controlled by the kidneys. The skin corresponds with the lungs, which manifest their essence in the body hair. However, the lungs are controlled by the heart. The tendons correspond with the liver, which manifests its essence in the nails and is controlled by the lungs. The flesh and muscles correspond with the spleen and manifests its essence on the lips and is controlled by the liver. The bones and marrow correspond with the kidneys, which manifest in the head hair and are controlled by the spleen."

"Overindulgence in salty foods will coagulate the blood circulation and will change the color of the blood. Overindulgence in bitter food will cause the skin to become shriveled and dry and the body hair to fall out. Overindulgence in pungent food can cause spasms, tremors, and poor nails. Overly excessive consumption of sour foods can make the skin rough, thick, and wrinkled, and cause the lips to become shriveled. Overindulgence in sweets will cause pain in the bones and hair loss. All these symptoms and conditions are a result of overindulgence of the five flavors."

"It is said that the heart is benefited by the bitter taste, the lungs by the pungent taste, the spleen by the sweet taste, the liver by the sour taste, and the kidneys by the salty taste. However, this never implies that one many overindulge."
Sometimes I confuse an Eastern & a Western theory. So I was aware poor circulation can cause a loss of body hair on the lower leg. I think of this as a bit of hair hypoxia - not receiving the nutrients it needs to survive. The Eastern connect the Lungs to body hair, but the essence of the liver is controlled by the Lungs.
I saw this interesting comment about the liver and hair online:
Once your liver is better able to process hormones, fats and toxins your hormonal balance will improve. Toxins will be eliminated from your system faster, meaning your body will have more capacity to deal with less essential jobs such as growing hair, rather than dealing with toxic build up.
In simple terms, the liver is the most important organ in the ageing process. If your liver is running really efficiently your body will be in better working order. It will be healthier and cleaner. That means your hair and skin will no-longer be neglected as much. There will be a greater abundance of nutrients available to grow hair as they will be needed less elsewhere. Your blood will be cleaner which will improve circulation and aid in the transport of nutrients to the scalp.

Re: Eyebrows

Ok, ok, I'll give it up :) It's called Renavive. I took it long enough for my hair to grow an inch or so, so it was no longer unusually short, then stopped. I didn't measure or anything, but I think the hair growth slowed after I stopped taking it.

I think it just grew faster, not thicker, but it grew back thick anyway.

Thanks for the quote! I've been meaning to buy the Yellow Emperor book...

Hi
I also had mine done 2 years after taxotere. I rate it as one of the best things I did after bc. I also had the individual hairs done rather than a solid block. I'm due to have mine topped up as they do fade slightly. I was also advised to check who performed the procedure to ensure they used good quality pigment to minimise the risk of a reaction.

Re: Eyebrows

I create my brows daily. Pain in the butt. But I am hesitant to trust just anyone.

I like the little strokes. Have a friend who has ridiculous looking tattooed brows. It's an art, and like everything, with practice you get better.

Somedays, they don't match. LOL. But ya know, some of us actually do have one side of our brow bone higher than the other. Ashley Judd for example, I've noted...

Kim if you were here, I'd go to YOU for sure! Your brows, and your face, look beautiful.

Lost full brows to Taxotere. That was '99. There is no hope here. And -- hair underarms and on legs, not to mention places you do clearly do not want hair...

Lashes, well, people used to ask me if they were real. They were. Now, so sparse and short! I work what I have. Using Sephora's ARE THEY REAL mascara lately and with side swiping they do multiple. My lower left lashes have about 7 hairs. Ridiculous. But I am healthy and well!!!

I like the v shape for brows, slightly rounded for my bone structure.

Without brows, we have no expression. Brows are KEY to our appearance!

Love your lipstick too, Kim, btw! What is it?

So proceed cautiously, Rachael. Kim's types are a great guide. And they do have to be touched up ev few yrs I hear.

'lizbeth you crack me up! Just love your energy. And Rachael, well you know how much you amaze me...

Hair on head was like a bush. Had to be thinned regularly. Not anymore... Thin, frail. It is a daily project, like wrestling an octopus, but in the end, I manage to pull something off... We work with what we have, right?

Re: Eyebrows

Lash extensions are applied strand by strand. Every hair on your body has a growth phase, a resting phase and a shedding phase. You loose about 5 lashes a day. As lashes shed, you would have to replace them. Although you will have some lashes for 2 months, you will need to go every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain a full look.

Andi,
There are some really good permanent makeup artists in Florida if you need a referral.

Andrea Barnett Budin 11-18-2013 07:36 PM

Re: Eyebrows

okay, Kim, I'd take a referral from YOU!

But -- I live in Boca...

Do you know someone really really close?

I know about the numbing cream. Essential. Some say it's like tiny little stings. I would assume they didn't get the numbing stuff.

About how long does it take to do brows?

I was bald, as were most of us. Twice actually. The last time, w/no brows or lashes, for New Years Eve, I treated myself to lash extensions, which must mean I had some stubs.

This was my regular manicurist. Gorgeous girl. They'd booked me, in a private room, for a half hour. Well, I suppose I was among the first she'd done. It took about an hour.

When I got home, I took my cuticle scissors out and shortened them. They were over the top. But lush and wonderful!

All night I could feel myself batting my lashes, and some men were making direct eye contact with me which felt great as without makeup or my wig, bloated from steroids, I didn't feel very pretty.

It is exciting to think I might actually do this -- with a great referral only...

I have no tattoo and will never have a tattoo or a piercing. Not even my ears are pierced. And you never see me without earrings ever for nearly 50 yrs!

So the idea is somewhat freaking me out. But not to have to take 10 minutes every day to put on eyebrows -- WOW.

Once when I was sick, but getting better, I went to my dghtr's house for dinner on a Sunday. I went without makeup, which doesn't happen.

My grandson, then maybe 10 years old, said, Mima! You have no eyebrows! I smiled gently and said, Yes, I know. He went on, No. I mean -- you have -- no -- hair... We had a good laugh. You look -- different.

How did that happen?

I explained, gently, that it came from chemo, not wanting to scare him from taking any medications he might need. Really?! That can happen???!!!
