Outlandish Pink Ribbon Products

It seems to me that October is fast becoming another marketing opportunity and is losing its impact.

I thought that it might be interesting for us to present some of the more outlandish breast cancer promotions:

I'll start with:

Yes, it is going too far.

I heard there is some kind of "pink ribbon" VODKA!!!

And in the Safeway ad, they have IAMS cat food as one of the items that count towards the cancer research donation amount. However they don't specify WHO has to eat it ...

Oh, and TIDY CAT ...

Bill 10-07-2008 10:08 PM

yeah, I've noticed the same type of thing. All of these companies and organisations are all of a sudden promoting "breast cancer awareness". Everything is pink. I hope they are throwing some money into the "cause", dammit! I apologise for my coarse language.

My Mother-in-law used to sell Avon. So I have many Avon product with pink ribbon on it. I just went to the Avon site, and here's one of the items I found after I typed in 'pink ribbon':

Avon Breast Cancer Crusade Bubble Bath

Join our Breast Cancer Crusade.

price: $8.00

I think I like my pink ribbon pen and pink ribbon pin better. The pink ribbon umbrella was broken after I used it only twice. And the tote bag full of the pink ribbon prints...

Avon is famous for donating money for the breast cancer cause.

Y-Me is now Breast Cancer of Strength. Funny they got two posts here - guess the name change doesn't really change anything. But It is a good organization - I have called the peer counselor hot-line a couple of times and had received many of their publications when I was first diagnosed.

By the way, Bill, are you originally from Great Britain? I am curious because of the way you spell 'apologize'. :)

Everyone,
I agree it's over the top ( especially the jeans) but hey what can I say, lots of pink around my house. In my area the salons are doing pink hair extensions for 10.00 and the full amount is going to research. I took myself and my three daughters and paid the 40.00. The salon actually had 15 posters of women who had lost their lives to bc, pictures of these women w/ their stories. One of the stories was written by a 10 year old daughter. The positive side is that most of the girls in one of my daughters class now have the hair extensions and my daughter has written an essay about needing more money for cancer research (not just breast cancer), and the entire class has signed on and the teacher is sending the letter to our representative. Maybe it will fall on deaf ears BUT I believe the kids will remember the experience. I do think the ugly side of cancer was protrayed better in this promotion rather than "buy my product" promotions. I am glad to see the salon display the posters, showing lives cut too short. Also, I DON'Tt want Safeway to stop bc awareness month, a lot of money is raised. You know it's kind of like the "what difference does it make to a starfish on the beach" maybe one dollar will make the difference. Money for research - I support. Love ya,

I could do the pink highlights....the Pink Girl Look, and the KitchenAid Blender, for the pink cosmos, and the jeans if they don't make my butt look big...but NOT the Mop or the Iron....

Believe51 10-08-2008 01:48 PM

Hey Sheila

Do you think that they have a pink ribbon Martini Glass?? Might not go with my theme but would be a nice addition to my home. In all seriousness I am not a drinker but after having toasts for you all on vacation, I realized that a drink or two every now and again feels good. What better a drink to toast with??>>Believe51

Maybe Kim in CA would like this for her horse, but I think this is another example of "piggyback marketing."

Warning!!! This post may contain graphic content!

So if you are still reading this, at least I warned you.

At our local supermarket they have a garden tool section and they were selling a variety of pink products including, and I'm not making this up, pink hoes. Now far be it from me to impugn anyone's marketing strategy, but somehow "Hoes for the Cure" just doesn't sound quite right.

Sheila 10-10-2008 04:12 AM

Lee.....you crack me up!

StephN 10-10-2008 10:18 PM

How about the STOCK EXCHANGE today!!??!!

There was a great big sign in pink with the ribbon and saying "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

A few ladies in various shades of PINK clapping ever so politely at the closing bell - on a day when the market roller coastered into record loss territory.

Thought I would lose my dinner when I saw that ...

How about "stock loss awareness??"

fauxgypsy 03-31-2009 08:37 AM

I saw pink M&M's yesterday and now this

Oh good, maybe I can get a couple Pink Hoes finally (Wink)>>Believe51

Colleens_Husband 03-31-2009 10:14 AM

Is it wrong of me to envision using the pink hammer on the head of the person who came up with the idea? It is. Sorry .... er, I don't mean sorry. What I meant to say was 'its a good thing I never thought of that then'. I need to go back into the anger management class that the judge, ummm, not the judge, I volunteered for. Yes I volunteered.

Believe51 03-31-2009 10:23 AM

If I wonder why it is wrong for me too to use that hammer the same way, do you think I should be in sitting in class with you? Thanks for the chuckle.>>Believe51
