More research on benefit of exercise

Here is a great little article on some of the compelling evidence regarding exercise and breast cancer recurrence. It is from the magazine "Today's Dietitian" which can be viewed on their website.

Re: More research on benefit of exercise

Good article, and I'm sure it's helpful for professional dieticians to remember exercise as a component of good health. It's good for everyone to get up and get moving. It improves mood, if nothing else.

However, the "absolute risk" of getting breast cancer is misstated. The author of this article is in good company. This statement keeps being made, and it's incorrect. A 12% "absolute risk" doesn't mean that one in eight women will get breast cancer.

You can easily see that if you look at another statistic. There are about 2.8 million people (99% of them women) in the US who have or have had breast cancer. There are 330 million people--let's say 170 million women--in the US. 2.8 is 1.6 % of 170, not 12%.

The 12% absolute risk means each individual woman has a one-in-eight chance of getting breast cancer over the course of an 80 year lifetime. Broken down by age, this "absolute risk" is much lower for each decade of life. Here's a link to a breakdown of what it actually does mean: http://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms.../understanding

I'll get off my soap box now.
