Megace??

Not sure where to post this, so here it goes. 7 year triple positive survivior. Went off tamoxifen after 5 years switched to femera, hadn't had a period for 6 years. On femera for10 months...had one. Had uterine biopsy to make sure it was a period...negative biopsy but ultrasound showed pre menopausal not post...now they are thinking of putting me on megace??? Looked online and seemed more for Mets breast cancer, little confused, see oncologist next week but wanted some opinions. Anybody experience anything like this???

I did. Went on Arimidex and had a period in 4 months. I had my ovaries removed instead.

I stopped Tamox and had my ovaries removed too in order to take Arimidex as my Onc felt sure my period could resume anytime.

Re: Megace??

I've never heard of Megace for early breast cancer, either. I've only heard of it for advanced HR+ disease that is resistant to all other endocrine treatment, often when a person can no longer tolerate chemo. And even then sometimes it seems like it's given more for the weight gain SE than for the cancer. And like you, I can't find anything about it online (for adjuvant tx).

I've always wondered what (if any) the role of the PR is in HR+ breast cancer, so this is an interesting (to me) idea. But you'll need your oncologist to to give you some good evidence to support this rather strange approach. What country are you in, and is this a regular oncologist's recommendation, or from an alternative practitioner? Please let us know what you learn!

Thanks for the input...I live in Ohio and yes it's my regular oncologist. I see him next week so I'm interested in what he says. I did find online that it is given to stop uterine bleeding during menopause, but mine only lasted a few days any way. I'm leaning towards hysterectomy, don't need that stuff anymore, lol. I will share my results after I see him next week.

They can also use a drug called Zoladex to make you post menopausal as far as estrogen levels go. It is an analogue of the hypothalamic hormone that stimulates the ovaries to secrete Estrogen. The constant ovarian stimulation causes the ovaries to shut off as a result of feedback inhibition. It could be used as an alternative to surgery
