Re: Prayers needed... Scared

Keep in mind that your uterus and ovaries may protect you against heart disease. And you are very young to go into surgically-induced sudden menopause. You may find it unbearable, and then need hormone replacement therapy to cope, which might well make you wonder why you were so quick to cut off your natural hormone supply.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. It doesn't seem necessary, and it's quite possible that if you wait until you've got a bit more normalcy in your life, you will not be so freaked out about recurrence or so willing to do drastic things. At any rate, you should get a second and maybe even third opinion.

I like the "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" analogy from higher up in this thread. I love my oncologist, and she's pretty unflappable, but I think that's true of her.

Good luck!

A cyst is a cyst is a cyst. Get rid of the cyst if it's causing problems. In the meanwhile, get the BRCA testing done and talk to a genetic counselor if it comes back positive (that you have the BRCA genes which put you in greater risks ). He/she will help you chart your family history and consider all factors before helping you make your own decision.

Sending you good vibes.

Re: Prayers needed... Scared

i had a partial hysterectomy before cancer and my remaining ovary out post cancer and i can tell you i have never regretted it for a minute. i had the partial because of a multitude of problems, cysts, severe cramps from endometriosis and several other issues and am so happy to be pain free ever since. so i'd give it the thumbs up, even if cancer was never involved. in my case, i suffered for decades from intense pain and for what? my surgery was a piece of cake and i was up and around again and even working out again in no time. frankly, i cared a whole let less about an ovary than peace of mind (my mom died of ovarian cancer shortly after i finished rads). it seems to me you will be repeatedly tormented by a cystic ovary and every time you will be worried is it cancer? i don't feel like any less of a woman. menopause is a drag but pain and anxiety and fear of cancer is 10x worse. good luck whatever you decide. v
