Gastritis Anyone?

Well I am starting my new treatment of Tykerb and Xeloda today.

Two nights ago I began getting extreme pain under my rib section only at night. I have been scanned to all ends so we don't think it is the cancer. The specialist says it is most likely Gastritis and I have started Prevacid today. I will also get tested for the bacteria that causes ulcers. I was reading in the potential causes gastritis that chemotherapy could cause it.

Does anyone else have any experience with this and words of wisdom to share? I have never had stomach problems before.

Thanks, Carolyn

Carolyn,

I was tested for the bacteria in my stomach in July, and I did have the bacteria-h plori, if I remember the name correctly. I started eating salt, which I have never eaten much of, to get iodine in my system. I had to take antibiotics for several days to clear it up. The bacteria made my stomach hurt terribly.

I have had tummy issue's since chemo three years ago although thankfully was negative for H-Plori. I do have to take nexium daily and watch what I eat as I really suffer pain and bloating after anything greasy or too spicy. I do at times get similar pain around my ribs on both sides. I was told at the time I had a hiatal hernia but wondered if there's something else causing this.

I had Cat scan in January for similar symptoms - labelled as irritable bowel syndrome. Took the pills for two days and it feels fine now. I have decided that 'beef jerky' was the culprit.

Well - Prevacid at $185 per 30 pills seems to be doing the trick. After the first pill I was fine. I must go for the blood test to see if I have the bacteria that causes ulcers but I am glad to have relief in the mean time.

I guess a year solid of chemo is taking it's toll on my tummy.

Carolyn,

I am glad you got some relief. Let us know if you have the bacteria or not.
