Optometrists

Is every two years okay or are we supposed to get our eyes
checked every year?

Hi Pink -

What does the Canadian health care system allow? I would go as often as they will pay.

Do you have a family history of eye problems? If so, there may be specific things to watch for.

I have been going every year since my diagnosis - mainly because I had "chemo vision" and needed to change glasses. Then eye doc saw some other things to watch closely.

The standard of care is every 2 years but people with eye 'issues' go every year ... like glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes etc. I was just wondering if there is anything special to watch for because of the breast cancer. I have ordinary eye problems ... can't see without my glasses :)

Steph...
How long did it take for your "chemo-vision" to resolve?

I wear glasses my Dr does every 2 years. He/She should tell you if you need to go every year.

Uh oh....I don't know what chemo vision is, but I have noticed that my reading bifocals are not as good as they were before my chemo treatments. I was going to make an appointment with the optometrist. Haven't had the time with chemo and work and all. Should I go ahead and do that or wait for the chemo to be completely done? Is Herceptin a factor?

Re: Optometrists

The "chemo vision" lasted a while for me as I had to launch right back into treatment for stage IV.

I already wore prescription lenses before diagnosis, but they were not very strong. I would have times that things looked more blurry and I needed strong light. My eyes seemed too tired to do much reading, even the newspaper.

Taking Herceptin alone for many years did not seem to bother my eyes.

I would say to go and see how much your vision has changed and get new lenses. My vision did not get better to the extent that new glasses were too strong.

I was not impacted initially, but now almost years after Taxol my vision was worse. Dr not only changed prescription but also said I have start of cateract. My mouth is still dry compared to before.
