Fosamax

My new endocrinologist has prescribed Fosamax, once a week, for my osteoporosis. We still dont know why I got osteo so young (age 51). Based on my bone density test I probably had it before starting Femara but hard to know for certain considering I had never had a bone scan before. My calcium and Vitamin D levels have tested normal (3 tests since July). Is anyone else taking Fosamax? Have you had any side effects?

Re: Fosamax

I had osteopenia (and still do) when I was in my 40's. Always did weight bearing exercise but it runs in my family. Also had early menopause so lack of estrogen definitely contributed.

I was on Fosamax and other biophasphates over the years, including Reclast injections. After 15 years of being on "something", endocrinologist and oncologist decided to have me on nothing since research now shows that 5 years is the optimum for that drug class. Plus, Femara and other AI's are definitely the culprit in any bone loss.

Side effects of weekly Fosamax - can't really recall any but you need to take it 30 minutes before drinking or eating anything to prevent any kind of GERD/heartburn.

It's a pretty benign drug, don't worry

Be aware that bisphosphonate use can have major dental implications...

Re: Fosamax

I have been on it for over a year and a half, no problems at all. I just had a dental visit, with xrays, my teeth, etc are fine.

I take it every Saturday morning first thing; the label/doc says wait 30 minutes before eating/drinking ... I wait an hour just to be on the safe side and have never had any problems with any heartburn, etc. I usually mix and bake a batch of homemade oatmeal cranberry scones during the hour and they are coming out of the oven right when the hour is up. :)
