I'm curious if anyone else has experience with impaired docs. At my mom's final visit wit her first onc, he showed up in some kind of fog. My mom still has the memory of a nurse shaking her head and turning him by the shoulders, pointing him towards his next appointment. She complained and was pretty much blown off. He left shortly thereafter to head up an oncology department at another hospital in another state.

Rich, I firmly believe a Neurologist I was seeing yrs ago was impaired. I basically had to see him to get my pain meds and I'd swear he indulged in them himself. He was always nodding off and talked so slowwww. Seemed confused at times. Pass that I'd rather not say much more.

I decided at that time to check him out on the "Medical Board of California" and I did find out he had several disciplinary actions taken against him. I also found out he lost his hospital privileges. Not long after I recieved the report I ordered on him he up and disappeared. Landed in another state and is now practicing there. I've known a few others that ran into the same over the years.

That kind of state to state shuffle is disturbing..happens with nurses (in high demand) too. The other part of this is whether vulnerable feeling patients feel up to reporting things like this.
In a variation on the dynamic, someone here posted about an onc wanting to pursue metronomic chemo but was concerned about what the other docs would think.
