Chestnuts - any experience with whole chestnuts?

I just roasted some chestnuts, and when I opened the shell they were fuzzy. Is this normal? I've never cooked the whole nut before.

Thanks, Jackie. Someone gave me these from Christmas time. It's hot where I live, so I guess I should have refrigerated them. oops.
