Gene study - Jewish women

From Army of Women:

Certain genetic mutations have been found to increase cancer risk. Some of these genetic mutations, or changes, are more common in Ashkenazi Jewish women than they are in women of other ethnic/racial backgrounds. Since genetic material is inherited, it is easier to identify new genetic factors that may increase or decrease risk when a study sample is restricted to one particular ethnic group.

Mutations in the genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2 can increase both breast and ovarian cancer risk. However, not all women who have mutations in these genes go on to develop breast and/or ovarian cancer. Furthermore, many families with an extensive breast cancer history do not have these genetic mutations.

Could it be that some women who have inherited a BRCA genetic mutation have also inherited other genetic factors that reduce or increase their risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer? And might there be genes–in addition to BRCA1 and BRCA2–that also increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer in Ashkenazi Jewish women? A research team at New York University School of Medicine is trying to find out!

If you are an Ashkenazi Jewish woman and this sounds like a study you might be interested in, read on!

If this study isn't a good fit for you, please pass this Call to Action along to someone you know who might be interested! We really need your help to fill this study!
