How long is recommended for herceptin?

I have just had my last Taxotere/Carboplatin/Herceptin infusion. I've had six treatments--one every third week. I have now to finish with herceptin alone for 12 more treatmets. That will be a full year of Herceptin. I've experienced some rather nasty side-effects, fatigue, extreme constipation, intermittent nausea and generally feeling lousy for about a week after each infusion. But I'm now over the worst I hope. My question is: What is the optimum time to be on herceptin? I've heard everything from six months to three years. Are there any definitive studies I can look at? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

My Onc said 1 year is the standard. I would think optimum would vary with the person being treated?

Brenda,

There were no differences in the BIRG study - one year of Herceptin and the European HERA study - 2 years of Herceptin.

Many of those that reoccured in both studies went back into remission after Herceptin was continued.

Regards
Joe
