bone concern/
Not sure where to post

my latest Dexa scan shows osteopenia.
I asked my doctor if I qualify for zometa or some other bone building medication.
Maybe Not only to build bone but I thought it could also protect against
Bone metastecies.

She basically said no and suggested I take supplements, which is fine, I guess.
So what are some supplements that
Go along with vitamin D?
She suggested calcium but The problem with calcium is that every time I go on calcium I get Kidney stones. The urologist
Has told me Not to take Calcium.
I'm also diabetic since chemo and lots of milk raises my glucose.
Thanks ahead for any suggestions -

Well, leafy greens have alot of calcium. Perhaps a smoothie with unsweetened almond or cashew milk and berries or pineapple. The nut milk alone has calcium and practically no sugar if unsweetened. For greens use kale, spinach whatever.

Eating calcium rich foods are probably less likely to cause stones than supplements. Others are all nuts, especially almonds. Fish but especially sardines ( which are also loaded with Omega 3). Anything green - leafy is highest but green beans, even canned white beans, chick peas etc. Broccoli, butternut squash. Make sure your vitamin d is in the normal range. Leafy greens and veggies will give you the magnesium and phosphorus your bones need too. And most of these have a low glycemic index for your glucose control. You need to aim at 1000 - 1200 mys of calcium a day.

Just chiming in to say if your tumor is ER+ (as mine both were) I would ask about eating almonds or drinking almond milk... they are highly estrogenic. My oncologist told me to avoid them.

Soy milk - yes as it has strong phytoestrogens but not nut milks. Absolutely not a problem with almond or cashew milk and you're not drinking gallons just some.

Hi Becky,

I meant the almonds themselves ... good to know about the milk! Probably because its so processed, but it does have more calcium than cow's milk. And who knew about pistachios? Again, the nut itself. Although there are other articles out there that say whether the nuts actually raise your estrogen level in your body is still uncertain.

Becky are you still taking Arimidex? I just finished 4 years, heading into year 5. I go for a bone scan the end of May/see my onc for my 6 month checkup in June.

So far, so good.
