10 year Survival Stats Leap ahead over Last 50 Years

Beware - this study looks at the 50 years 1954 - 2004 and things have greatly improved but remember, adjuvant Herceptin was only available since (the very, very earliest without being in the trial) May, 2005 so that is not taken into account so in reality, things are even better now. |

Also, I think MD Anderson probably has more 'hard-to-treat' cases than average medical facilities. One lady in our church went to MD Anderson for her lung cancer after her oncologist of the 'big' general hospital in our town gave her only 6 months. Her children took her to MD Anderson and she was able to have three more years of quality life.

Great article Becky - I had received this article the other day and I am glad you posted it. So true that the current data is not in yet! We should be hearing some wonderful stats in the near future.

So true about the lack of post Herceptin stats... I was just talking about this last week with my onc. when I had my regular visit - he said," Caryn we don't have long term stats yet for your subtype of BC - Her2+ (early stagers treated with Herceptin). On top of that you are triple positive, only about 2.5-3% of the entire BC population." We will be the future stats - and I'm betting on longer term survival rate, which went up in Canada as well.

Obviously there's some wonderful progress being made in the past ten year. Let's hope the new stats will give us a clearer picture.
