I just logged on to post this also, Hopeful. You beat me to it! This is interesting information coming out of the WHEL study, however, I am finding it hard to believe that a difference of ~4g carbohydrate (one group increased by 2g, one decreased by 2g). I personally don't believe we are going to find one sole factor that increases/decreases recurrence but rather combination of many factors. It would be interesting to know the types of carbs consumed by both groups (fiber containing vs. candy/fat containing carbs). Also, it would be interesting to know the average fat (and what type) in both of these comparison groups.

Tanya, I agree with you. This study demonstrates an association, which is not at all the same as a cause and effect relationship. It seems like a pretty narrow window.

A very narrow window! And how did they measure it? Self-reported information is notoriously unreliable. There's maybe a 5-gram per day difference. Five grams? Twenty calories? Give me a break!

There are numerous good reasons to cut back on starch, most notably because of the lack of protein, fiber, antioxidants, etc. in refined carbohydrates. But I am skeptical about its effect (especially at this tight a tolerance!) on breast cancer recurrence.

Not sure if this article (abstract) has any relation to the subject:

So wait, she said with fear in her voice...longing for reassurance...that means if I cut back on sugar, pasta, and refined flour products...I can still have an occasional piece of dark chocolate...right?

But...if I were to have two pieces of that delicious ambrosia...according to this study...I'm screwed? The pressure to make good food decisions is getting very intense! LOL

Protein and produce...protein and produce...keep saying it with me...Amy...I might need an intervention!

Be well, everyone!

Denise,

Enjoy your dark chocolate. It's got lots of antioxidants. Chocolate is good. Go ahead and have two.

Just have an extra serving of vegetables, especially kale, collards, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, celery, garlic, and onions.
