Terrible Reflux
 

13 months post chemo-TCH. 6 months post Herceptin only, and I am suffering from terrible reflux. I did not have reflux pre-chemo and am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. If so, will it ever go away? I am a letter carrier in SC, and t seems to be worse in the heat- maybe because I have to drink alot.

When I did long-distance bicycling I always got reflux from drinking lots of water. Maybe you could spread your water out throughout the day so your stomach doesn't get too full.

Get the reflux treated. It can have long-term adverse consequences. There are some good online resources for managing it--identifying triggers and avoiding them. But you might need medication.

Reflux is often treated by the protein pumo inhibitors like Prilosec. If this doesnt work Metaclopropamide (Reglan) might,
In theory its best to avoid Reglan with breast cancer because it increases Prolactin secretion but a short term course probably will have little clinical significance. Talk with your doctor.

I'm still on prevacid 30mg daily. Have tried getting off of it many times to no avail. I never had a problem before treatment. There are a bunch of foods to avoid, (tomato sauce, coffee, chocolate, and on and on) plus eating high fiber/lo fat can help. You may need a course of (nexium or prilosac, etc) to calm things down...

Would Omeprazole help?

Paul - I have been taking metaclopramide, prescribed by Oncologist, for nausea. Been taking it for over 2 years, although now only taking a few a month. Didn't know and never told about Prolactin increase! I wonder what else I haven't been told?!!

Im sorry I mentioned it. But I was honest. The negative effect is theoretical
and if the breast cancer cells are prolactin negative it probably means little. There is a long acting drug called Cabergoline which is a dopamine agonist. It is given maybe twice a week as the half life is long. Cabergoline will knock out any increased Prolactin.
If the Metaclopropamide is working for the nausea there is no problem taking it. Every drug is a risk vs benefit. To be nauseous everyday is misery. Youll live to 300 years because every nauseous day will seem like 10 days.

Now that I unintentionally opened up a can of worms Ill do some research on the metaclopropamide vs breast cancer thing.

Please don't be sorry!! I really appreciate the honesty! Fortunately I'm only taking a few a month now as nausea much less. Thank goodness for this site - here (in Scotland) info from the hospital is basic and I am so glad I found this website. Don't get me wrong we are well treated (particulary as on trial) but info sometimes feels as if its top secret.
