Mammogram after double mastectomy
Did a search on the site and couldn't find much on this. My Oncologist does not recommend any further mammograms after my double mastectomy. Wondering how many of you have had a mammogram since surgery? He also said there is a change of rupture (I have silicone implants). His opinion is that at the moment I should consider myself "cured". Also, I had radiation so he thinks that would have knocked out anything left. Thank you!

Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
Your can't do a mammogram with implants. I get a breast MRI every year (and was getting MRI's even before my 2nd go round)

Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
My onc doesn't recommend any screening of any type. BTW, I had nipple sparing on the healthy breast so there is still some breast tissue left.

Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
I had nipple sparing in both breasts. I know all oncs are different, but mine is pretty conservative in regards to what is considered best practices/standards.
Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable without the MRI follow up every year. But I've had cancer twice... |
Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
Thanks Jaykay, I have a very strong history of breast cancer that spreads to the other breast. So it seems odd not to do any type of scan.

Julie,
My onc told me the same thing that yours did so no mammograms and no mri's. I didn't retain my nipples but not sure if that has an impact. Take care |
Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
I think it is a mistake to discontinue all testing so soon. As you can see from my history I was IIb and had a recurrence about 3 years out from treatment. It was caught early due to the scans and treated. Without any screening I'm not sure when the tumor would have been detected. Probably not until I had symptoms. Just my experience. Everyone is different.

Re: Mammogram after double mastectomy
No mammograms if mastectomy is my understanding, though if you have implants it is recommended to have an MRI every 3 years regardless of dx to check for leakage. However insurance should cover it for us (vs someone without breast ca who had augmentation/implant) Self exam of the skin is recommended
