New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Today begins another new journey for me in the cancer connection. The PET/CT and MRI showed tumor involvement with the brachial plexus nerve, causing the pain and numbness in the shoulder, neck and chest. I am fortunate that at this time, the 2 masses are pressing and not entwined. Gemzar was stopped today, and I will have mapping for radiation tomorrow. I will remain on Herceptin through rads, and will go back to the 3 week dose. Since I am not showing active systemic disease at this time, only local disease, it seems like perfect timing to try to blast the nodes and masses.

I am NOT looking forward to the 7 weeks of 150 mile a day trips to Chicago, but in the cancer world we do what we must.

After radiation, the oncologist said I will resume chemo.

When my journey began almost 10 years ago, I had 2 goals, to live 10 years, and to reach 60....well both will occur in the next 2 months, time for me to reset my goals and plan for 10 more years and 70! I refuse to go out without a fight!

Any tips on neck radiation are welcome, or radiation in general.....hoping I dont get too tired as I will be driving myself.....
I would appreciate prayers and positive thoughts for a successful journey ...I dont know how I would have gotten this far without all the love & support from those on this site!

Why limit yourself to 70 ?? Go for 80,90 and beyond.
Personally I am planning to live to at least 90. Please join me.
Good luck with the radiation. I am in your cheering section and I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
Take care and keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Sorry to hear this but glad you are renewing the 10 year plan!
Is there any relief for the driving? I know our local hospital/cancer center has a hotel sort of facility where you and family members can stay inexpensivly while receiving treatment to avoid long drives. Or is there a transportation service?
Keep the faith.

Will certainly pray for you as you embark on this new journey.Really glad to hear that there is no further systemic disease and I hope these rads will lead you to NED.
Good luck

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Sheila,

Well, while it's good to have a plan, the commute part of it sounds awful! I agree that at least for a few nights a week, it might be worth considering staying over somewhere, somehow?

My rads for primary tx involved about 150 miles of daily commute and it was pure drudgery by the end -- it felt like that's all I ever did. Books on CD, tape, or iPod helped a LOT. Several times, for example, I missed my exit (which of course should have been an auto-pilot thing by then) while raptly listening to some light mystery-or-other. Was that safe? Well, I made it and never fell asleep. Who knows?

Libraries have audiobooks of various kinds, and if anyone asks you what they can do for you, you could say you'd like gift certificates to buy audiobooks that you'll donate to your cancer center for others to enjoy, when you're done with them. Also used book stores often have good deals on audiobooks.

The other thought would be public transportation -- no trains or such, in Illinois? Even if it took much longer -- you could sit back and read, or knit, or sleep, again not necessarily every day but once in awhile, to break the monotony (and physical drain) of all that driving.

Lots of good thoughts and prayers coming your way, of course.

Debbie Laxague

Sheila,

From the moment I first joined this forum, YOU have been my hero. I'm so sorry that you have more (as Brenda would say it), Crap on a Crapstick!! I agree with Elaine - go for 90 as a long term goal!

I do have a wonderful and delightful cousin that lives in the Chicago area by herself. Let me know if you are interested at all in staying in Chicago part of the time instead of commuting.

Love YOU!!

Alice

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Hi Sheila,

I have had to go to a larger center twice in the last 2 years for radiation treatments; once for 6 weeks and once for 4 weeks. Both times I actually moved there for the duration because it would have been 600 km roundtrip each day. I looked into the Cancer Lodge where I would have had to pay $40/night (however there was a $50/ night extra charge if someone were to stay with me) and meals were provided, a local inexpensive hotel for $50/night, or a short term rental at a condo (good thing it was the off-season) which equalled the cost overall of the hotel. I decided on the condo because it was like home and I could have visitors and family stay with me. Yes, it was expensive and we had to use our savings, but I have and will be adding it to my income tax expenses and I didn't really have a choice to drive that far everyday. The Cancer Agency where I went also had a list of accommodations but I basically found out the short-term rental idea because of someone I knew from my area; the Cancer Agency didn't have condos as an suggestion.

In the long run, it was less stress on me; treatments were at different times of the day and I was a five minute drive from the centre. I had alot of company that would be my support and I actually spent time with my 3 sisters for the first time in 4 1/2 years. One came from Ottawa (across the country), one from Calgary (eight hours away) and one from my area. I call those times my radiation vacations because so many people helped to make the time easier for me and because for the most part my radiation treatments have been the only time I've gone away.

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Sheila,
Well yes, get that next 10 year plan in place! I know you've been waiting so long just to get answers about what's going on, so you could know what you're dealing with. You were correct in your guesses - and now you can move forward.

There is good news in there tho. Good news that systemically things are still under control. Good news that you can now blast the local crap and get some relief. Good news, I think, that you can take a break from the Gemzar and hopefully regain your strength (and some of those darned "counts") or at least hold your own with the rigors of radiation.

I REALLY like the idea of getting a place to stay up there. I know you hate being away from your family - they are so much your lifeline - but to do that commute daily in the winter sounds nasty, especially if you are not feeling well. I assume there is public transportation to Rush, so there might be many options. With gas, wear and tear on your car, you might not be that much more out of pocket.

You know you would be welcome at my sister's house, but the Yorkie (and moody 15 year old!) might just push you over the edge!

Let me know if I can help you in any way. You know you are in my constant prayers.

Stamps, magic and miracles to you my friend!
Chris

Sheila,

You're awesome!!! Here's to 10 more years! And good luck with all the logistics getting to the Windy City. Maybe you can stay up there for the 7 weeks? Any sisters here willing to let you stay with them?

Many hugs,

Marcia

I am loving all the suggestions and positivity I am getting from all of you! As far as staying in the city, probably not possible...my husband begins 6 weeks of mandatory 12 hour days, six days a week next Monday, so he will be gone from 6am to 8pm.....I have 2 loving black labs that would not be happy to be alone that much...I just calculated my miles for taxes from last year....7800 to Chicago.....if things get to be too much, I will get help, if it means getting my Dad to stay here so I can stay up there....I just hate to ask him...he will be 88 this year, and his get up and go has gotten up and gone...

Sheila,

Oh goodness, your Dad is 88- gosh yes, shoot for 90! I read through your history and all you've conquered and been through and I feel like you will certainly get through all of this somehow too. I've felt like my dreams of becoming a grandma some day are rather pie in the sky since I'm 44 years old- but heck a 10 year plan suddenly sounds good to me!

Thanks for blazing the trail for the rest of us! Sending lots of prayers and light your way!

Sheila,
How cute are those dogs! There's lots of incentive to get home to them I'm sure! I love your going for gold attitude. Good luck with the radiation I hope the travelling goes smoothly for you and that you get at least a couple of stop overs near the centre to rest up too.
Take it easy and be careful with that driving

I TOTALLY LOVE YOU. Walt sends his love and he thinks you will be hitting that 70 mark along with your sisters. I agree. You are a magnificent fighter and if I can be half the woman you are, Sheila, I shall be blessed.

My bet is that your Dad would be honored to help you. Naturally, you cannot leave your two furry children. I completely understand your position, and if we are honest our pets give us so much to live and fight for. How can that be, I wonder, and yet it is so very true.

Guess we will have to plan on a meeting in San Antonio next year for a short term goal!

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Sheila,

I have to echo Laurel...I TOTALLY LOVE YOU also. I have been eagerly awaiting to hear about your tests...boo hiss to the results. But Sheila, if there is anyone that can whip those tumors into oblivion it is YOU. You are so brave and strong and unsinkable….and at the same time so tender and loving and caring to those of us fortunate enough to call you friend.

Okay, those precious babies…I LOVE THEM TOO. I wouldn’t be able to leave them for a minute!

How can I help you? I will drive from Detroit to take you to your treatments…and you can sleep on the way back. You can even drool and I won’t tell anyone. Or I can stay with the 4-legged babies. I wish I could scoop you up and safely deposit you to the end of March when your rads worked and you are free of the beast and mapping out the next 30 years.

Love you, Sheila

Maureen

Sheila,
I am saying strong prayers for you. I understand the concern for your two babies...(have one of my own)
Is it possible to find temporary afforable housing
for the time you need to up in Chicago that permits pets.
Maybe you could look into that we have a few of them
here for the people who are relocating and require part time residence - they even have places that permits pets.
Go on line or ask your local real estate company if they have a connection of such a facility. Radiation can be draining...I used to make my appointment the last one at night around 8 PM so that I finished went home and went to bed. Making morning appt. or early afternoon appt. I found that if there was machine issues and delays I would sit for hours. But last appt. at night any issues were resolved during the day. Hope this helps.
Wish I had family in Chicago to open their doors to you.
Also to consider maybe a college student looking to earn some dollars would be willing to be hired to drive you (at least for part of the treatments) which would give you a break. Love you Sheila and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Jean

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Sheila,

I drove myself my seven weeks of rads, but it was only an hour each way. Not so bad, but the fatigue did start setting in as I got closer to the end of treatment. Maybe at that point you could give yourself a break midweek. Stay over on Tuesday night or Wednesday night if Dad can keep the babies! He just might enjoy one night a week with the granddogs!

I have no doubt you will scare this beast to passivity yet again!

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sheila,
You are in my prayers EVERY day...but I'll pray especially hard while you're starting your trip toward 70! After all you've been through, rads should be a breeze! You are an inspiration!

Your "babies" are beautiful! They must bring so much joy into your home! I can definitely understand why you would be reluctant to be away from them. Stupid Cancer! :(

I have to admit, when I had radiation, I was fine until week 5...then the fatigue became overwhelming. Driving...in winter...would not have been a good idea. Just something to consider. Were you fatigued during your rads in 2009?

All the best!
Denise

Hi Sheila,

So sorry to hear about your progression. Remember you have the best docs on the planet at Rush/Chicago...so I am confident you will get the best treatment possible. That radiation department at Rush is impressive...You might want to message me off line, but where do you live? We have an apartment in the Chicago suburbs with my mom but our permanent home is on a lake 150 miles west of Chicago. We spend our time between the two places, since we both can work remotely. I would be willing to help you out, drive you to radiation etc. just so you have a buddy to talk to! Let me know if I can help you. Or possibly I can watch those beautiful labs of yours...I would love to get my hands on those 2 cuties!!! Our lake property is lab heaven!! We have two Jack Russell terriers. 10 years...you are a warrior!!!

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Shelia, Thanks so much for the update- I'd been thinking about you and praying for good news. I think the radiation will really help, but from what I remember- it is very tiring and causes alot of inflammation, making you feel worn down. The radiation feels alot like a sunburn that goes right through your body, but thankfully the symptoms don't start until about week 2. For your drive bring comfy clothes, nothing that presses or rubs on the area, I really liked shirts that buttoned in the front, but I had radiation to my chest and axilla. I'd suggest to schedule your daily radiation and drive when you are most awake and ask your team if there is the possibility of moving your appointment time on short notice, like if your having a rough day or are caught in traffic. I'd hate for you to be rushing through Chicago traffic, tired and worried about missing your appointment. Remember, all the radiation, chemo and therapies are worthless if you don't make it there in one piece. ;)
Best of luck & love you!
Kristin

Sheila, Just sending good thoughts on the new plan of action. Sheila, this is exactly why you are such an inspiration to all of us.There is no doubt in my mind you will be here in 10 more years and the 10 after and so on. Stay strong and keep fighting for your health. Eventually we will do that lunch. I could even meet you if you are up to it following one of your rads appt's. Let me know if you are up to it. Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

I am fairly new to this disease, it's progression, it's diagnoses, and so on. But how impressive you all are in your kind offers to you, Sheila, as you are faced with the next step in your plan. I have learned by reading your posts on this thread and others what a caring group of people you are when another has news to be shared. Unless you have been through any of this, it is difficult to understand the feelings we all share. Most of you have dealt with much more than I, but your genuine words of encouragement and hope and friendship to all others are an inspiration. If I lived near any of you, I would drive with you or meet you or something. No one is alone through all this. Sheila, I pray for strength and endurance as you go into this round of radiation. You are a fighter.

noses. Take care.

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Not to make you anxious, but food for thought if any way to lessen likelihood and perhaps prevent:

one of the rare complications of regular whole breast radiation therapy is brachioplexopathy, which usually occurs years later and can be debilitating and painful.

Since this radiation is not for the whole breast but SPECIFICALLY FOR the area near/adjacent to/possibly including the brachial plexus, I would get a second opinion on the radiation therapy aspect of it--are there any techniques, what does/does not need to be in the field, different types of brachial plexus treatments which might lessen the likelihood of that.

As I recall you are a nurse by training, so would be able to feel comfortable interpreting what they tell you.

I know little about radiation therapy, but know Stanford and a few other places (Stanford has the most experience) are using cyberknife for things other than brain tumors/mets, where it is of ultimate importance to have pinpoint accuracy of delivery of the SRS. I will try to later look up brachial plexus and radiation therapy (I am currently travelling) and see who might have written papers on it. Feel free to do so via ENTREZ PUBMED in the meantime.

Frank Vicini in Detroit seems also to be an expert on breast radiation, APBI. but you may need someone who is not necessarily a breast radiaiton expert

This may come up with radiation for sarcomas etc ie sparing the brachial plexus.

There may be no way to spare it since it is close if not involved, but perhaps IMRT or other techniques. There is no data to support using proton beam from what I looked up in the past, but this may have changed (lots of hype on proton beam, for which they charge huge amounts, but little data)

Is it the brachial plexus on your dominant (handed) side?

Since you are trying to irradiate near/at something which can suffer from the radiation therapy in a way that would affect your life (very rare for wbr, I don;t know the chances w radiation at/near it) I would certainly want to be sure they had the opportunity to think through all the options and choose the one they would want if it was their own problem!

First thank you all for the offers of support, rides, dog sitting...what an amazing group...wish I could hug each and everyone of you in person.

I had the "mapping" done Thursday...I did not realize they make a mask out of mesh that is warm, then cools as they shape it and mold it tightly to your head, neck and upper chest....it ends up being a hard shell cast that I will wear each time and it is bolted down to the table.

I was also marked and a bolus pad placed for a sub pectoral node they want to blast. I will be receiving Tomo Radiation....which is done in slices to deliver a precise dose. They said this is due to the brachial plexus and the structures in the neck. I was tattooed and will begin the radiation on the 20th for 7 weeks, 5 times a week.

Lani, this may define more on the radiation type and area of my neck it will be.

I got to make an unexpected trip to Chicago again Friday with my little grandaughter Jasmine as her rod in her spine broke again from an incident on the school bus....she had to go to Shriners in Chicago, and will be having 2 new rods placed in her final surgery after she gets clearance and a picc line placed at Childrens in Chicago....sometimes you have to wonder why everything happens at once!

Sheila,

I had the same mask procedure when my brain was zapped with IMRT targeted radiation. You will get rid of those neck nodes with some zaps. Thanks for the link about the Tomo radiation.

Jasmine is as strong as you are and she will come through! Praying for both of you.

Joan

Re: New Plan, New Chapter for progression

Congratulations on meeting your first set of goals, you are certainly remarkable! I hope you reach your next goals, and I know those beautiful dogs are wagging their tails in hope. Why do you have to go so far for treatment? I wouldn't like that either, I hate long trips. I have to go to San Francisco in March for a follow-up with my UCSF surgeon and I"m dreading it. It's 100 miles.

I hope you can work something out that is easy on you and enjoy the next ten, twenty and thirty years!
