This is a newspaper article about our Little Pink House of Hope Retreat in Oak Island N.C. that my family was a part of. I have really utilized the resources that were identified on this post, so thank you so much Paula for starting this.
I received my cancer cup today and it really was a nice moment in my work day to see a package on my desk. It contained a very pretty teacup and saucer, a teabag, an angel to carry in my pocket or purse and a handwritten note. Nice thing to see and open after coming out of a heated meeting at work. I've also signed up for the housecleaning and that will take a few weeks to see if they can match me up. I'm also getting rides to Dr. appts through the ACS (I'm not driving) and I'm signed up for the looking good feeling better class on 2/4. I do believe finding ways to treat myself or experience joy is going to help me beat this thing. So for all those that contributed to this post, especially Paula, my day is quite a bit better by your taking time out to send this out to the group. Thank you!! -Julie |

I am so happy that you were able to use some of these resources. :) I appreciate you letting me know. I'm sure you'll enjoy the time with the other ladies at the Look Good Feel Better session in Feb! One tip I especially was glad to learn was how to pencil in natural looking eyebrows and they demonstrated a nifty trick I used to make a comfy turban out of a soft tshirt with a scarf wooven through. If anyone is interested, this is the perfect time to get applications in to Camp Kesem, Little Pink Houses of Hope, and Casting for Recovery (see links above). It may work fine to apply later in the year but summer Camp Kesem for kids with a parent with cancer fills up fast and some application deadlines are coming up quickly (ie: if you live in FL, applications for that Casting for Recovery retreat have to be in by February 22nd for the April retreat). There's a whole lot more to that weekend than learning to Fly Fish (although that part turned out to be super fun too). The accomadations are lovely--the one ion Fl is at a Hilton. I'm excited that I'm going to be able to volunteer for Casting for Recovery and Little Pink Houses of Hope this year--wonderful organizations blessing the socks off of women with breast cancer. I'm also going to apply for casting for recovery but there is a glitch with the link for the So. CA trip. It directs me to a resort in PA! Otherwise, I'll apply for the trip in Central CA although I would rather connect with women in my area.
Yesterday I went to a wonderful wig shop that specializes in products for chemo patients and got a great hat (for hikes and walks) and a couple beautiful scarves that are fitted already and idiot proof in terms of tying, etc. and another cute little short hat thing. Very cute! My boyfriend is taking me shopping to buy some new earings as the woman in the shop said you feel a lot better with extra jewelry after losing your hair. Julie--sounds like you are making the best of your situation. :) I normally am not much into makeup or jewelry but wore them a whole lot more when my hair was gone and they gave me a boost. I'm glad your boyfriend is so supportive and wish you the best as you go through treatment, hanging in there a day at a time. I popped a note to the Casting For Recovery folks letting them know about their link glitch for Southern California. Maybe you want to send them an email too. Some states who don't have CFR are invited to retreats in states that do, but there are retreats in central and northern Cal so looks like a mistake.

I was rejected the housekeeping as they cannot accomodate another patient so I'm back to paying for it since I'm physically not able to do that level of work given I still have a drain in, have this darn pain and starting chemo on Thursday.
Paula, what a wonderful State you live in. CA is broke despite we now pay more in taxes than any other state. I know I personally will pay it forward when I'm able. So many of the resources you listed are the result of donations and volunteers. I'm so grateful for friends, family and especially my boyfriend who did all my laundry tonight. And the people on this site who provide their words of wisdom. |

I got an email back from Casting for Recovery re: my inquiry for So Cal residents: >Good morning Paula: Our southern California program is not happening this year. While we are hopeful we will be ready to go in the future, currently, we are directing any interested participants to the Skytop, PA retreat. Much of our funding comes from grants which stipulate that the women they are supporting must be represented from certain counties within the their geographical location. While the retreat weekend will be of no charge to the selected participants, the transportation to the retreat would be the responsibility of the selected participant. I have listed the link to the web site "You can Thrive" previously in this thread, so it can be found above if you're interested. I met it's founder, a fellow breast cancer patient advocate at the Alamo breast cancer symposium in San Antonio in December. She has lost her donated space for the wellness center and volunteers are presently travelling to other temporary donated spaces at spas to provide these free services. Hope those in the forum who live in the New York area can enjoy these services! Sounds great to me. When I was going through alternative medicine cancer treatment then chemo and radiation a dear friend blessed me by giving me massages 1-2 times per week, supplemented by my family's back and foot rubs. It's such a nurturing, relaxing stress reliever. I was so grateful to be the recipient of such loving gifts of encouragement. If you don't have a "You Can Thrive" in your neck of the woods or the means to pay for those kinds of sevices, perhaps a spouse, child, or friend may be willing to provide back and foot rubs for you or a gift certificate for a professional one. It makes a lovely birthday or get-well-soon present. :) Paula |

Over 2800 children experienced a week at Camp Kesem last summer. This year over 3500 children who have/had a parent with cancer will enjoy an awesome week as 13 brand new chapters are launched across the USA. My daughters have loved being part of this incredible fun-packed summer adventure the last two years. This camp is offered completely free of charge and organized and run by University students who do fund raisers to make it happen. If a child has attended Camp Kesem before, they are warmly welcomed to return and they can apply with early bird registration now. It's like a big extended family If a child has not attended camp before, registration opens on January 1st. Earlier in this thread I posted information re: Camp Kesem if anyone is interested. I'm giving a heads up repeating the link from last time I posted as camps can fill up very quickly.

(Approved by the Board on 7/2/12.) ---------------------------------------------- Breast Cancer Treatment bills include breast cancer surgery, oncology/chemo, radiation, dental work (related to chemo), lymph edema expenses and prescription loophole drug coverage Payments are made to the providers of services. Patients need to apply for help. Circle of Hope is often the last payee in the process. They help those in financial distress and poverty. There are income guidelines and criteria. There are a couple of ways patients can apply. A client can fill out the grant form online, get the form at their clinic/hospital or call or have the forms sent in the mail (218.525.1905 or 218.464.1626). Bills must be submitted with the application or sent in the mail with theAuthorization For Use or Disclosure of Information Form. The forms need to be filled out by the patient as these are legal documents. How does the block grant treatment payment program work? Financial help will be given based on the application and meeting specific criteria from a grid developed from the application. Patients should always go through their clinics and hospitals to see what financial resources are available first. After this procedure, clients should contact Circle of Hope. This organization follows H.I.P.P.A. policies, adheres to patient privacy and pays directly to providers for breast cancer treatment services. What are other resources that are available to breast cancer patients? Other resources include financial help with bills (rent/mortgage, utilities, gas cards. bus cards, and food cards). More money is available in Minnesota. If you would like to donate, let us know by sending your donation in the mail or adding a donation by credit card online. These applications will be available through clinics/hospitals, as there are specific people who need to fill out portions before the patient fills out his or her section. Talk to an oncologist social worker or financial worker. What are other ways a breast cancer patient can receive help? There are other services offered as well by Circle of Hope. If one does not qualify for financial help, the secretary can point out the resources that are available locally, statewide and nationally to get the needed help. What are " feel good social activities"? Some services may be achieved through our community support group called Circle of Support, telephone calls, one-to-one meetings or participation in inclusive group activities. Circle of Support group meets the last Wednesday of the month (except in August and December). The new time is 4 p.m.-5 p.m.at 314 W. Superior Street, # 610.To participate RSVP to Peggy at 525-1905 or e-mail for details to: peggy@circleofhopeduluth.org. -Clients will need to fill out a simple form the first time they attend. -We are know including gynecological cancer patients along with breast cancer patients in our support group and activities. -Circle of Hope has a resource library of materials, books, and CD's. This is the former Y-Me staff and the organization is located in Glendale, Wisconsin. Call and they will line you up with a trained mentor or companion with your same diagnosis to speak to about unanswered questions you may have. Registration for the 2014 Women of Color Cancer Retreat is now open.
This retreat is held at Rotary’s Camp FL 1915 Camp Florida Road, Brandon, FL 33510 the weekend of August 1-3, 2014. Registration is now open for new and returning campers. If you would like to register for this weekend camp – which starts Friday night at 6pm and is over on Sunday at noon you can call the office at 813 948-7478. This camp is open to any women of color who has been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. As with all programs at Faces of Courage this camp is available at no cost to the participants. Anybody else's children participated this summer in Camp Kesem? This is a free camp for kids with a parent with cancer and put on in many states by University students. I've shared the info and contact link about it previously in this thread. My girls attended for their third year this summer, one of them as a "counselor in training". My son and two of his friends attended Camp Kesem this summer. They had an absolute blast! It's a wonderful program with dedicated counselors who have just as much fun as the kids. My son can't wait for next year!

I'm glad your son and his friends got to go too. :) It's a really neat camp not based on financial need and an amazing opportunity for kids with a parent having cancer. Did your son tell you about "cabin chats" and the empowerment ceremony? The non-pressure opportunities for the kids to open up and share IF THEY WANT to are a real gift. "CancerCare® Launches New Transportation Assistance Program for Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients
New York, NY, February 6, 2012—National nonprofit CancerCare has launched a new program to provide financial help to people coping with metastatic breast cancer. The “CancerCare Get You There” program will provide individual grants to metastatic breast cancer patients for covering transportation costs such as gasoline, parking and tolls, and taxi, bus or train fare to and from their treatment. The program is funded in part by a generous contribution from Celgene Corporation. CancerCare is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide free professional help to people with all cancers through counseling, education, information and referral and direct financial assistance. Metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of breast cancer, and is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women. Approximately 155,000 women are living with metastatic breast cancer in the United States today. “The medical and practical costs associated with the ongoing treatment required by many metastatic breast cancer patients present a significant financial challenge,” said CancerCare CEO Helen H. Miller, LCSW, ACSW. “I’m thrilled to announce our new program, which will provide treatment-related transportation grants to thousands of people living with metastatic breast cancer.” To receive a “CancerCare Get You There” transportation grant, patients must meet certain eligibility criteria and complete an application form. "Peppermint & Ginger Comfort Kits are FREE kits created to help provide comfort and help alleviate some of the more common side effects caused by chemotherapy. An “Adult Kit” contains peppermint and ginger teas (which can help ease nausea), a soft bristle toothbrush, alcohol free mouth wash and toothpaste and lip balm (to help ease oral side effects experienced as a result of treatment), warm socks and a relaxation CD. When possible, P&G adds in other goodies as well. Their “Pediatric Kit” contains hot chocolate instead of teas and it’s contents will vary depending on the age of the patient.

"Hello my name is Amanda Rosen! A couple months ago I came up with an idea to make Port Pillows after some friends of mine said that the seat belt was hurting them when they were in the car driving to and from infusions. They told me that they would stick the seat belt behind their back, so that it would not rub them. My goal was to find a safer way. This is when I reached out for help from the community. I was able to get supplies donated and people to donate their time to sew pillows. The response was amazing! We donated over 1,600 pillows locally and have personally mailed more then 400 special individual requests both in the United States and internationally. We have delivered pillows to all the Levine Cancer Institute Infusions Centers, Levine Children’s Hospital, Healthy & Home and Home Infusion Locations. We have expanded quickly as you can imagine to several hospitals and support groups across the country. We have just completed an order for a cancer support group in England. Shipping all over the world. Port pillows are for anyone that has a port! We have all different colors, themes, special interests and children fabric like superhero’s, princesses and themes that are popular for children and adults! We even take special requests if we can! The best part is that the pillows are 100% free to all patients with a port and that includes shipping. We are asking for donations for supplies and that also supports us being able to continue to provide something so small during such a difficult journey for these very couragous patients. We have had an outpouring of support from volunteers reaching out to see how they can help. It takes all kinds of support to continue this wonderful project and we can’t do it without all of you. A very special lady Mrs. Robin Ciarico Harris is an amazing woman who jumped into action and has become an extension of our family. She is our sewing expert and has put so many hours into this project. We need continued help and support. I have also met a wonderful lady Ms. Susan Morgan with Springs Creative Products Group that has made so many generous donations of amazing fabric. Again the tremendous outreach from the community goes from “Charlotte and Beyond. The community has been great! We have created a Paypal Donation link because people have wanted to donate and do not know where to go to donate. This money will be used for supplies and shipping! More details to follow regarding a local “Sew-A-Thon/BYOM” at the Morrison YMCA. I’m incredibly inspired by the kindness and generosity. Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can’t be worn for weeks after surgery. Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. Our special volunteer knitters provide these free to those requesting them. Knitted knockers can be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing." |

The Cancer Card Xchange is a 501c3 tax-exempt charity.
CCX collects monetary and gift card donations and then distributes gift cards to verified cancer patients simply to brighten their day. http://www.cancercardxchange.org/p/referrals.html They give free gift cards to cancer patients in active treatment. They do run out periodically but right now is a good time to request one if you are interested. Paula |
